High school graduation is around the corner, and you start thinking about what is next. Should you attend college? This question goes beyond just a yes or no answer, however simply answered the answer could indeed be either “yes” or “no”. College is useful beyond the degree and saying you completed a college course and yes college parties are fun which is a tempting reason to want to go to college. As a college student who at one point did not see the point in going to college, I found many reasons as to why choosing to go to college is completely situational.
College is a big part of an individual’s journey to become self-dependent, over 70% of people graduating from high school attend a 4-year institution. It is obvious that a degree may seem necessary for your success but that is not always the case. Many successful business owners proudly speak through their own experiences of not doing so well in school or just not finishing their degree. It is true that these people are successful and anyone can be successful without a college degree but, what advantages do you get from going to college and are they even worth it? If you want to be a doctor, engineer, and scientist college is a great option for you and there is nothing wrong with having a passion for those fields, although you will absolutely have to go to college. However, if you have no preference on what you want to do even after years of searching and just want to be successful and financially stable there are multiple options for you past a college degree.
College life is something that everyone should enjoy, you finally reached the age where you feel like an adult. You might now have started to chase your passions. Going through college prepares you in both adult life and passion as you will be practically alone. Your teachers are not going to email your parents about your failing grades. The responsibility is also on your shoulders, which is something every college student has to get used to. This is a great advantage you get from attending college, regardless of what you want to major in. College can show you the necessary skills needed to function in the adult world either way you will have to learn adult responsibilities. College however does a far better job at preparing you for this than not going to college. The choice is always yours, the recommendation is always to go to college, however if you are responsible and have tried college but just find no success after years, then not going to college may be for you.
Time management is a big thing in college, at this point you either have to pay your own tuition or your parents/scholarships cover the costs. To the less than 1 percent who do have a full ride scholarship to college, congratulations but to the rest of us we have to work in order to pay for our education. Balancing a job while being in college is not easy, especially if you no longer live with your parents. During the weekdays you’re at school all the time and on the weekends you might have to go to work to keep your income stable. Of course this is different for everyone but the focus remains the same, college is hard, and it will force you to change and adapt which is a good thing. Especially for you procrastinators out there, college will force you to get out of that bad habit.
Let’s focus on some more encouraging reasons to attend college. Firstly, all colleges have different programs for what you want to major in. This is great for meeting people of the same interests and there are thousands of students that may be interested in the exact same topics as you. In high school you’re limited severely inter personally, there is little diversity in high school and you are held back by parents. In college, you can build better relationships, and get outside of your comfort zone which is a great experience. Additionally, 28% of Facebook users stated that they met their spouse in college! If you want to get a great opportunity to possibly meet your soulmate and get a good education then college is definitely a great option for you. If you do not attend college, you sometimes miss out on these opportunities and relationships however that is entirely up to you, college can just make that process easier.
You could argue that you will not have time to have fun in college because of your responsibilities but that is very much the opposite. A lot of college students have hours of fun with classmates, who will most likely carry on to be lifelong friends in the future. High school friendships tend to end after each one has gone their separate ways, however in college you are more likely to encounter a life long friendship/relationship. Colleges also host multiple events that are usually free of cost which can help bring the community together. Attending college events is a good way to meet new people and learn about clubs and organizations.
We all know college costs money, although college facilities are said to be free they are actually just a part of our tuition. Since the facilities and services are included in tuition we might as well take advantage of that. From gym facilities that have pools and complimentary towels, to cheaper all you can eat buffets colleges really have a lot to offer. Libraries are full of books without having a library card, everything you need is on campus. For those of you who do not plan to take advantage of all the facilities, then maybe having to pay extra for these facilities is enough to make you not want to go to college.
We have been called young adults since we started our teen years, however young adulthood does not really start till we get to college. When we go through the college journey we learn about hard work and managing your responsibilities effectively. For many seeking to change as a person, college can bring that change through practice and repetition day by day to become a better and more knowledgeable you. For those who are already passionate about a career they want to pursue even an Associates degree could help you adapt to working hard. College is not for everyone and that is not meant as a demanding statement, by this I mean that you can go to college if you would like but if you do not want to then you can choose not to. “College is not meant for everyone”, comes from the misconception that everyone will go to college and not going means that college was not meant for you, which can sometimes make people think they are unintelligent for not going to college. School is not about how smart you are but more about how hard you work, so go for college if you would like even if you doubt yourself.
College will ultimately teach you more than what you need to know for your future job. Some of you may find college as being your only option for what you want to do and that is completely normal, just make the most of it since college has so much to offer. There are multiple life advantages for going through the college curriculum as we mentioned it is not all academic. Your relationships can be immensely impacted, and you may have experienced some of the most fun in your life. All these advantages are achievable with or without college, the choice is yours, and I always recommend trying college even if you do not think you will enjoy it.
