7 Reasons Education in Mexico Should Be Improved

After listening to so many stories about horrible school experiences from my friends and family in Mexico, I was shocked and realized the poor quality of education they had. I concluded that there were very few people, at least where we are from, that care about schools including the professors and staff. I knew that this could not be the only place in Mexico with such poor quality education and sure enough, it isn’t. The problem starts from the government, which does not find a solution to this problem, all the way to the people who work at the schools. Education is important all over the world, but it needs to be improved in Mexico.

1. Children Staying Off Streets

Gang Members

I've known so many people who hate school, and a few of them would hang out with their friends instead of going to school to learn. These friends would usually be bad influences and gang members who would use drugs. Sadly, some of the students would also be influenced to consume drugs on the occasions that they would skip school to hang out with their friends. The kids that stay in schools should have the opportunity to learn, but most importantly, they should be in a safe environment where they learn to stay away from these types of people.

2. Stress-Free Parents

It is extremely difficult for a parent to not feel worried about leaving their child home alone. I have learned that in Mexican culture, most parents can be overprotective of their children and are afraid to leave them home alone and even more worried to let them get out of the house alone, especially if you are a girl. If the child is at school, it is a relief for parents to know that they are in good hands and are learning. Schools should be able to protect and prepare children for the future.

3. Education Over Work

Children Working

Most children who don’t go to school either hang out with bad influences outside of class or work. These children are usually males who work with their parents or alone in a small job like in a store. I have seen so many young boys that work in grocery stores, carrying bags for customers to their cars for tips. I have also seen others that go with their fathers to the fields because it is a way to support their family and get used to the family business. This would be different if schools were more affordable and offered a better financial solution for poorer families.

4. Better Job Opportunities

If students continue their education through high school and eventually college, there would be better job opportunities available for them. Most Mexican students leave school once they finish tenth grade. This is because students believe that if they leave school, they can find a job faster, which does happen, but they don't realize that if they continue in school, then they could find better jobs. These are jobs that require a higher level of education, but they are also higher-paying. This would only be possible if these people were well-taught at school.

5. Fewer Mexican Immigrants to the U.S.

Many Americans are concerned about the issue of immigration to the United States, but the more concerning part is the minors who come without their parents. The main reasons that they come or are sent by their parents to the United States is for more opportunities and a better life. This is because they don’t believe that they are able to find these in their own country and this is mainly because of the bad education system. The Mexican government needs to improve schools so fewer minors would need to come to the United States in search of a better future.

6. Becoming a Better Person

A Good Kid

Basic classes like math and English are not the only things students are taught in school. They also need to learn how to become good citizens and people in general. The schools have standard rules that teach students important things such as boundaries and what is considered to be good and bad behavior. These are real lessons that they will actually use and carry with them in the future. Even though important lessons like these are taught usually at home, it is important for students to learn them at a school that cares because being in public, outside of the parent’s view, shows if students have truly learned the lessons.

7. The Future of our World

Children of the World

The most important thing that everyone should keep in mind is that even though we are talking about Mexican students, we cannot forget that they are the future of the world we all live in. We should care about the education of any child around the globe because it is likely that some students outside the United States will come up with an innovative invention or discover something new. No matter what it is, we can be sure that it takes a good education from a great school to make an impact this big.

Conclusion

It is probably obvious to everyone that education is important, but it may not be as obvious how it can improve and why we should even care about children from other countries. It is not an issue that can be easily resolved but by such practices like protesting and writing letters to the government, it can get noticed. Perhaps if the Mexican government realized the importance of a good education for every student, they would start making changes. As I had said before, everyone should care about the education of every child in this world because they are the future, and we may have to depend on them some day when we can’t look out for ourselves.
