7 Ways Daily Exercise Improves Your Mental Health

Daily exercise has obvious physical benefits in terms of staying fit and healthy. However, most people are unaware of its numerous benefits to mental health. Just half an hour of exercise, whether it’s walking your dog or lifting weights, can help with most of the common issues related to mental health. Ever since I’ve started exercising I have noticed a shift in my attitude and energy levels that contributed to my overall mental health. Based on the information provided in my health class, physical activity influences mental health mostly due to its connection to hormone production. Therefore, by staying active, you could reduce your anxiety and depression, get better sleep, and boost your self-confidence!

1. Problem-free Philosophy!

One of the most common causes of any mental struggles is a build-up of stress and the lack of coping skills. Exercise increases social interaction between people, which helps distract the mind from stress. Personally, I find that working out with friends or family takes my mind off my worries and gives me an excuse to get out of the house. It’s important to have time to care for yourself and exercise is a huge part of that. In addition, physical activity has also been shown to be a method of releasing emotion, in turn relieving stress as well.

2. Positivity

Whenever I am in a bad mood, I go for a walk around my neighborhood and feel better immediately. Going for a walk gives me time to think about and process my emotions; the change in scenery and sounds of birds chirping in the trees puts a smile on my face. Any sort of physical activity can improve your mood right away, whether it’s an indoor or outdoor activity. When the body is physically active in any way, certain hormones are released that aid in making you feel happier, more positive, and even more energized.

3. You can do it!

Almost everyone struggles with self-esteem in terms of body image and overall lack of self-worth, especially nowadays. By exercising for just 30 minutes a day, you will feel that improvement in your mood that will make you feel better about yourself. For me, the feelings of accomplishment and pride after keeping up daily exercise made me think more positively and made me feel confident. After keeping up the daily workouts I became more optimistic and enthusiastic than before. This boost in self-esteem will not only help mental health but enhance the physical results you see due to the increase in patience and positive outlook.

4. Peace

Anxiety, one of the most common mental disorders, causes people to feel overwhelmed, nervous, and extremely worried but physical activity can help reduce that tension. Firstly, the change of surroundings and increase in movement diverts the mind from anxiety. As I have mentioned before, for me going outdoors and exploring nature is a great way to distract myself from getting overwhelmed. Also, according to my health class, higher heart rate increases the production of anti-anxiety hormones, similar to those used as treatment medicine, thus reducing anxiety in a more natural way.

5. Be Happy

Exercise can ease the feelings of emptiness and other symptoms of depression. As stated before, it provides people with an opportunity for social interaction and a reason to switch environments. Personally, I live a more sedentary lifestyle but staying in my room for hours can get depressing; going outside and simply walking with someone gives me someone to talk to and a chance to enjoy the fresh air. In addition to the scenery change, the distribution of “happy” chemicals in the brain while being physically active leads to a more balanced hormonal level, therefore relieving the feelings of depression.

6. Sleepy Time

When you stay active daily the surge of hormones released keeps you energized throughout the day and sleepy in the evening when hormone levels come back down. The fact that exercising clears your mind also makes it easier to fall asleep. It usually takes me over an hour to fall asleep whether I am actually tired or not. I have noticed that after keeping up daily exercise, even if it is simple and light, I not only fall asleep faster than usual, but I sleep through the whole night. Thus, by including physical activity into your daily routine, you will fall asleep faster and have better quality sleep.

7. Staying Focused

Exercise is linked with hormone levels and production in the brain that are triggered by physical activity. As stated by my health professor, some of the hormones produced during physical activity are responsible for cognitive functions such as concentration. In addition to the previously discussed benefits to mental health, this would aid reduction of anxiety and symptoms of ADHD by helping individuals stay more present, get less distracted, and have better focus. For instance, I have had better concentration since I have started exercising mostly due to the better quality of sleep I get.

Conclusion

In conclusion, just 30 minutes of daily exercise, whether it's playing ping pong, taking a walk, or going to the gym, have a variety of benefits on mental health. So many teenagers that are struggling with mental health issues shut themselves in their homes instead of going outdoors because they don’t know any better. By spreading the word and participating in daily exercise yourself, you can pave the way to a healthy mind for yourself and others. In closing, it is crucial to raise awareness on how daily physical activity can aid in keeping your body and more importantly your mind happy and healthy.
