7 New Resources Detention Centers Need

Many people automatically think the kids that are in detention centers are “bad” or a “lost cause”. However, that is not true, many of these kids don’t have anyone to rely on at home, and don't go to school because it was never enforced. These are only two reasons detention centers need more resources to help these kids succeed. I have been friends with many juveniles that have been to detention centers. All of them have never had anyone to rely on and many of them provide for not only themselves but their whole family. This causes them to worry about how they will provide instead of worrying about other things like school mental health and just being a kid.

1. Tutors

In detention facilities tutors are crucial and would definitely be/ have a great impact on these kids. This is important because many of these kids do not attend school on a daily basis outside of detention, this would give them the chance to learn in the detention centers but also understand and grasp concepts better. It will get them the education they need to get future jobs. Some of my friends who have been in detention stopped going to school because they got detained. This held the back because they felt behind and school and saw no point in even trying to go because it was "embarrassing".

2. Art Teachers

You might be thinking, why art? Well, Art teachers could be something that helps these kids tremendously. Many of these kids need hope and something to look forward to. Not only will it give them something to look forward to, but it will also give them a chance to express their creativity. This can be very helpful to many people because they don’t realize this can be a stress reliever. Many of my friends would write letters to my mom, many of the times they had drawings and small doodles that would help them express their feelings toward what they were trying to explain.

3. Military

This is important because many are uneducated about the different branches and what they are. Many of these kids NEED to go to the military for a change. They may need to get out of the environment they’re in and this is the perfect way for them to do that while helping our country. They also might be on the verge of doing something they shouldn’t, having the military may keep them out of trouble. My family members who have been in the military say it is very helpful, it straightens you out, and you're able to get paid but also get help and learn how to be more civil.

4. Counselors/Therapists

Having on duty counselors/therapists would be beneficial because many kids don't know how to get help. These kids think no one cares about them, having a counselor can give them a safe place to express their feelings to someone who cares about them, without feeling like a burden. That can be a huge part of why they do things that have bad consequences. It is hard for just anyone to help them open up and talk about trauma. When I, talked to my mom (who works in detention centers) she said when kids don't feel heard they start acting out which is why this is so important.

5. Qualified Employees

Many of these employees' detention centers have been very aggressive and not understanding. We forget that even though they are in jail they are still kids, they need guidance and help. Many of these kids put up a wall when adults are rude/mean to them. We need employees' to stand their ground but also understand how to deal with these kids. From all the experiences I have had with the detention employees there are 2 kinds of employees, ones that care and ones that don't. I think having a job with kids you should care and try to help them. My friends in the detention centers always told me they hated it there because they weren’t being treated equally, everyone was so mean to them.

6. Trade Schools

Trade schools will be able to help many of these kids by showing them different jobs that they might have interest in. This will help because trade schools take less time than other schools like universities or community colleges. This would be a huge benefit to many kids who are confused about what they want to do in life. Trade school would be so helpful to learn in these detention centers. One, one of the kids Ii know who was in detention was able to go to trade school and is now working a job and turned his life around.

7. Medical Care

Medical care should be offered to everyone, unfortunately it is hard to get and very expensive. Inside these jails kids come in hurt all the time, they can also get hurt inside by falling, fights, anything can happen. This is a reason they should have good medical care without having to worry about the expenses. I know that it can be hard to get medical care and especially in jails, but this does not mean they do not deserve medical care, my mom has told me how many people have been hurt, and they have to wait to give them the proper medical attention hey need which can be very painful.

Conclusion

In conclusion, detention centers need more resources because these kids have never had any help and love that they desperately need. Being in juvenile centers is a cry for help, and can't do it without anyone by their side. These can help tremendously by giving these kids access to things they never knew existed. It can also lower the rate at which kids are falling into bad habits and making bad decisions, If this happens kids can turn their life around in a way they never imagined. These kids just need someone who can implement good things in their lives and show them how to do better. This is something that can be easily done by Maricopa county.
