Healthcare Rights As A Dialysis Patient

Working in the healthcare industry has really opened up my eyes and gives me a different perspective about a lot of things. There is a lot that goes on in a Dialysis facility and some things can sometimes be overlooked and taken for granted. Not only do we as Dialysis technicians have rights as workers but most importantly patients have a say and can determine a lot of things .Miscommunication is a huge problem especially with our minority communities but everyone deserves equal opportunities. After all, our job is to deliver a superior form of life for them and are expected to meet those standards.

1. ACCESS

I think accessibility is very important as a patient . Everybody is different and can require different needs. Having all the available resources can be very helpful and can have a major effect on the progress of someone's health . Having a qualified staff with a variety of capabilities is a top priority . Things like having access to social workers , dieticians , even translators at first hand can all help encourage and help with the effectiveness of someones treatment . Especially when most of our patients struggle with difficulties and disabilities.

2. SAFTEY

Safety is something very important in any healthcare facility in general . Especially these days , the right measures should be taken according to CDC policies . Both staff and patients are to be encouraged to protect ourselves and should be provided with the right protective equipment . Every company may have different guidelines but the right implements should be taken accordingly . Outbreaks in facilities are common but can be prevented from taking the right measures . After all, the goal is to reduce risk and to care for each of these patients .

3. RESPECT

Being treated with respect is a day to day concept that should be held at all times . Sometimes facilities fail to realize that we are not just crossing a name off a list , but treating somebody's grandmother / grandfather, mother/ father , etc…There is a major diversity when it comes to the people coming in for treatment, from all different cultures and backgrounds , ages , genders, etc.. Everyone deserves that equal value of importance from the moment they step into the building. Actions do speak louder than words and these patients notice it , after all they are sitting in that chair for 3-4 hrs a treatment. Value their time , their questions , take a moment to give patients full attention. Everyone deserves equal opportunities and the same level of respect should be given. Like they say treat others as you'd want to be treated

4. PARTNERSHIP

Building strong relationships with patients are very important as it betters patient experience and results . They are sitting here in a chair for 3-4 hrs 3x times a week , we may see each other more than we might see some of our relatives so building that relationship is key. When a level of trust is established and confidence is there, the environment in general turns so much better . The goal is to have a positive culture in the clinic to help establish these strong bonds .

5. INFORMATION

I feel like patients' health should be collective . As a group ,the patient education and constant updates given should be clear and easy to understand .Whether it be something good or bad, patients deserve clarity with their conditions. Sometimes in healthcare things can be overwhelming but should be encouraged to speak up when in doubt . Asking those questions and receiving honest answers should take place during those individual care plans. Dialysis is a whole new experience for many new patients, clinics have to be patient and understand that they have the right to ask as many questions until they fully grasp a concept .

6. PRIVACY

I think privacy is very important in healthcare and should be respected per patients' requests . Sometimes patients may not share something because they do not feel comfortable and that can be a problem . Our job is to provide the best care possible but that trust has to be established in order to help to the best of our abilities . They too have lives and have either things going on that could be affecting their treatment . It's important that they feel that comfort and trust with us knowing that they will not be judged, and information shared will be kept confidential.

7. FEEDBACK

Patients deserve to receive those constant updates and be able to provide feedback or even a complaint without it affecting their treatments . We need that feedback not to establish blame , but to make sure we are meeting those high standards or establishing a change if necessary . Sometimes patients do not share simply because they are shy or somewhat intimidated . But patient participation is encouraged as it not only makes it known that your voice counts but gives the facility a more patient friendly environment . Coming to treatment is already a drag for some people , making them feel equally important is a priority .

Conclusion

I too have loved ones that I care deeply about , and it's important to make everyone aware of the standards and rights to which they should be treated . Know that patients are equally important as the doctors, nurses...etc .Patients can determine several things throughout their treatment and can play a huge role in their own health . The goal is to build a sense of comfort with the environment for everyone as a whole . Ultimately understanding a patient's rights can give you a different outlook on their next treatment .
