Video games have grown tremendously through the years. I grew up playing video games on systems like the Nintendo 64 and Gameboy. As newer systems came out my parents would trade in the older generations to buy the newer ones. With the older game play, cheats were a fun way to change the game for anybody plugged into the same console. Gaming was a great way for me to spend time with my brothers. Now it's every man for himself, and the cheats are ruining video games. It takes away the fun and enjoyable gaming experience for everybody involved and has the potential to evolve into an overwhelming rage filled experience.

Back in the early years of gaming you and your friends were connected through a single console. They would split the screen into halves, thirds, or fourths depending on how many were connected at a time. Since the console and controllers had to be connected to a single unit, the trash talking would be close and personal. For situations where more than 4 players wanted to participate, controllers were often rotated. House rules varied depending on the owner, oftentimes the loser was responsible for giving up their controller so the winner could continue their reign and keep playing. We would always say the loser has to give it up, that way the winner could keep his chair and keep playing. And if you lost in a game you would play it time and time again to get better.

Cheats became available very early in the gaming industry. These cheats were made by the creators of each video game, and some by outside sources to help the gaming experience. All cheats were approved for each game no matter where they came from. All cheats were made to enhance the game itself for anybody involved in playing it. If a player couldn’t beat the game because you were stuck, some cheats made it possible to complete or finish the level and let you keep moving on in the story line. Some cheats let you do a copy of your story and let you spend what you want or do whatever you want in a “free play mode” way. That way your game campaign wasn’t ruined.

Cheats came out making a new world of gaming opportunities. This opportunity gives you and your friends unlimited possibilities. A lot of cheats allowed players the ability to add lives, new weapons, unlock shortcuts. Some of my favorites included Big Heads and Paintball mode from “James Bond 007.” “Snowboard Kids” had cheats that unlocked all snowboards. “ATV 2 Unleashed” had a similar cheat that unlocked all riders and ATVs. All of these cheats were available to any player on the console. Everybody knew the cheats were being used, and we all had to agree with it. This made cheating open and up front instead of behind closed doors with only you knowing about it.

Games made for any and everybody. Every player needs their own console, controller, game and TV/ monitor. All of this just to play with your friends. Yes, you can play at your own house and your friend could be playing on the opposite side of the globe. This meant when my wife was at home with my kids and I was deployed, if for whatever reason I got WI-FI, we could play together. Gaming has helped a lot of military men and women stay connected to people at home or friends that are deployed elsewhere. Gaming is a sport recognized globally. Where champions of tournaments can win millions of dollars.

Cheats in the games now still have some resemblance to the older generation of cheats. Some will unlock skins, cars or new maps without playing the whole game. But the problem now is that cheats only help one person, yourself. Cheats in many ways aren’t allowed or even created by the game’s architects like they used to be. Now they are only made by third party creators and hackers. You have to pay for the cheats or coding and for what? To scope somebody down 1000 meters out. To see the opposing player through the wall. To have an exact aim and be able to hit your opponent with a head shot every time.

Raging is insane in the gaming industry. The primary problem with raging is the cheaters in the games. When you are an “old school player” or have the mindset of one, you play a game for the fun of it. And when you lose you keep going and practice to get better. Well, when you have a Cheater who doesn't want to spend the time to get better and instead buys the cheats, you rage. It makes the games no fun when you spend hours and hours in a game just to get beat by somebody who can see you through the walls.

Anti-cheats help prevent those who want to cheat. A few companies have come out like “BattlEye” to help gaming companies with their cheating problems. Some gaming companies have also come out with their own form of anti-cheat to try to help bring the gaming experience back to what it used to be. These anti- cheats are designed to locate and ban cheat users. This is to try and clean up the game and the community which gamers all revolve around. It would be nice if there was a way for everybody to download an anti- cheat software to help protect against playing with cheaters.
How has gaming with cheats changed over the years? Gaming has changed in every way, shape and form from when it first started. Some changes have been made for the better. Others have made it more difficult to enjoy gaming in general. Cheats used to be a fun way for everybody to enjoy a different kind of gaming experience. And now it's filled with people who seem to lack the skill for gaming. These people just want an easy win. Anti- cheats have been made available but with the constant coding change in cheats it gets harder to detect them.
