The Positive Effects of Physical Fitness on Adults and The Elderly

Being involved in the fitness industry as a Certified personal trainer, I get the privilege of making large impacts on people’s lives in a positive way! I get to see people regain mobility, become stronger, faster and more flexible. Working in the fitness industry allows me to see the positive impacts physical activity has on someone and how in just a few months of dedicated physical activity can change someone’s life for the better. Physical activity is something that you can accomplish in a number of different ways, anywhere with just a little guidance, education and a plan of action.

1. Mobility

Mobility has a lot to do with our day to day lives. Nobody likes the feeling of being restricted in their movement. Good quality physical activity as well as targeted corrective exercise can change your mobility for the better. Sometimes in a matter of minutes to a couple of days. I have had clients who were able to walk a very short distance and in a limited manner, who in a matter of sessions was able to walk and stand for 2 hours straight giving a presentation to her staff. She explained to me, she would never have been able accomplish this without my help and the utilization of physical activity.

2. Speed

Speed and mobility go hand in hand. It's just as important to be agile and quick and that comes with an increase in mobility and strength. Speed doesn’t refer to running a mile in sub 10 minutes (anything below 10 minutes is considered above average) but your reaction time and movement speed. The rate at which you are able to do things. It's imperative that we also have quick reaction time, because it can sometimes save our lives, or help us with work, sports, or recreational activities. Or perhaps, you drop your phone. Increasing your speed may be the difference between a cracked or UN-cracked phone screen.

3. Strength

Strength in a person is a very important element. Not in the sense of being able to chop wood logs with a single swing, or opening fresh jars of pickles. Strength also applies to the way we hold ourselves, along with the way we walk, and complete day to day actions. That lower back pain you're feeling is actually caused by overactive back muscles and weak abdominal muscles. Or the pain in your feet is from an overactive soleus and a weak Anterior tibialis. These are all things that can be fixed by strengthening these muscles.

4. Flexibility

Flexibility Training

Let me paint a mental picture for you. You notice your shoes untied, whilst walking in the park. There is nothing to step on to bring your leg closer to your hands and upper body. Do you dread having to bend over to tie your shoe? What if I told you that having a good workout routine would remove that existential dread you faced during that dilemma? Well, it turns out that physical activity is not just limited to running and lifting heavy weights. Good functional training along with flexibility training within your corrective exercise can improve your flexibility and overall well being!

5. Bone Density

Bone Density

Do you or a loved one suffer from osteoporosis or osteopenia? Then do I have the supplement for you! Physical activity and corrective exercise has been proven to increase bone density, especially in the elderly. At age 40, you can lose 1% bone mass per year. What’s the benefits of increasing bone density? Well, that means your bones aren’t as brittle and weak. Resistance training such as weight lifting, cable machine or plated machines with proper set to rep ratio can improve your bone density. I don’t know about you, but I like not breaking bones.

6. Energy

Energy

Having at least 45 mins of solid physical activity 4-5 times a week can increase your energy. Exercise helps move more blood, nutrients and oxygen around the body to muscle tissue. This helps improve the cardiovascular system which means it takes less energy to use your muscles. This means your body has less of a need to enter a phosphate oxidation phase and makes you consume more oxygen to produce more energy for whatever you may be doing. Meaning more energy for your body overall, with less of the sensation of feeling depleted.

7. Mentality and Attitude

Do you know what more energy means? A better attitude. And a better attitude leads to a better mentality. Physical activity increases the amount of good endorphins your body releases making you feel happier more often. With my experience training, I’ve had many clients that come to me unhappy and need the use of antidepressants. In almost all of the cases with these clients, they come off the antidepressant because some much in their body changes. Physique gets better, eating better, sleeping better and overall quality of life increases. I don’t know about you, but that all seems like a plus to me.

Conclusion

With all these in conjunction, it seems to me there is no reason not be more physically involved. Just 45 minutes a day can make a very large impact on your health for the better, so go for that run and tell mom and dad to join you. Go lift weights with grandma and do yoga and spin classes with grandpa. I’m sure you’ll find that you feel a little bit better and that you actually like the way it makes you feel. Help prevent heart disease, osteoporosis and upper cross syndrome along with many other ailments that come from a lack of physical activity.
