It Is Important That Counseling Services Are Provided To Teens Who Are Struggling With Mental Health Because of These 7 Reasons

This listicle is meant for parents to read about the ways to better help their teen(s) struggling with mental health. Parents should know the different ways counseling services can help their child. As a college student who struggles with mental health and is part of a counseling program, I want to teach parents how counseling has impacted me and so will their teens. Counseling can help teens cope with their mental health.

1. Can reduce anxiety.

Anxiety can cause stress and worry to a child. If the child has too much stress, it can negatively affect the child's body. The negative impacts include trouble sleeping, constant worry, or restlessness. Being able to work with anxiety, the body will function without having the feeling of worry. Counseling services can provide ways to lower the levels of anxiety by using coping mechanisms. The research I would need to find to put into the paper are studies on how anxiety affects a teen's mental health.

2. It can help with depression.

Depression in teens is serious. Teens who suffer from depression feel alone and feel as if they do not have anyone to talk to. They tend to have suicidal thoughts and actions. Medication for depression is given to teens to lower their depression. Counseling services will provide routine schedules for the teen and the counselor to manage depression in the teen. These ways can include coping strategies that can lead to teens not having to take medication. The research I would want to put in for this section is personal experience and studies on the improvement of teen depression after counseling services.

3. It can improve academics.

Teens who suffer from mental health often struggle in school. This can mean poor grades, complications in participation, sleeping in or staying up late, ditching school, and aggression toward other students. When teens are a part of a counseling program, often the counselor will set goals for academic achievement. These goals can include meeting with the teacher once a week or asking one question a day for each class. The research I would need for the paper is studies or teen's personal experiences on how counseling helped improve academic skills.

4. Can build self-esteem.

A child's confidence is everything, especially a teen's confidence. Many teens doubt themselves, which can lead to depression and loneliness. Feeling loss of confidence can show in a teens academics, social skills, and feeling like they can't accomplish anything. I want to focus on how confidences has gained in teens over a few counseling sessions.

5. Improves communication and social skills.

Communications is key. Counseling can help with providing tips on how to start a conversation. When I was in counseling, I had goal to meet before the next session. These goals were to communicate with at least five people and see if they were able to hang out. This helped me with getting a job and becoming more social than I have been . I want to research the progression of social skills in teens who are apart of counseling programs.

6. Manage emotions, including anger.

Many teens are struggling with emotions. Some emotions are anger issues. Being able to manage ones emotions through difficult situations can help improve communication. Rather than acting out physically, teens can communicate calmly abut what they are feeling. Counseling rooms are meant to be a safe space. Talking about a teens emotions can make them feel vulnerable. I want to research studies on the changes in emotions after counseling sessions.

7. Improve problem-solving skills.

Rather than giving up, counseling sessions can provide problem solving tools to better equipt the situation. This can mean to make a step by step list to follow to manage time or work. Counselors are trained to help provide these tools. Being able to face the problem hean on can help the teen be more confident in themselves the next time a problem rises. I want to research the tools that counselors provide to teens during their sessions.

Conclusion

I have explained seven reasons for why it is important for parents to provide their teens with counseling services to help with mental health. Parents are meant to take care and support their children throughout childhood. Being a part of a counseling program will help the teen cope with mental help that will provide different coping strategies. I want to write about how counseling can cope with anxiety and depression, how it can improve academic skills, and how it can improve communication skills. Why is it that parents sometimes don't chose counseling services for their teens and often lead towards medication instead.
