1. They can be costly.

One huge issue that comes with conservatorships is that conservatorships are very expensive. In some situations, expenses can incur even after the conservatorship has been established. We can't forget about the legal fees and attorney fees that come with the conservatorships. We also can't forget that the conservator also has to get paid because they are taking time out of their day to make the decisions for the conservatee. Obtaining a conservatorship ultimately leads to loss of so much money and it is for the best to stay far away from them.

2. They typically last until the conservatee dies.

When wanting to obtain a conservatorship, you do have to consider the timings that come with it. Typically, conservatorships last till the day the conservatee dies. The only times when a conservatorship ends, is when the conservatee dies or when the conservatee is able to prove that they no longer need the assistance of the conservator. However, it is very tough to prove that you can make decisions on your own. Currently, Britney Spears is in court trying to get out of her conservatorship that has been ongoing for 13 years. Another situation where a conservatorship may end is when the conservatee's assets have been used up completely.

3. Conservators can abuse the power that they hold.

One downside when obtaining a conservatorship is that you are at risk of being abused. Typically, a conservator will have so much power at end, that they will most likely end up abusing that power. People do not realize that being a conservator is a huge responsibility and it gives them so much power that they end up abusing that power for their personal gain. They can also become abusive towards the conservatee. The conservator is in charge of so many decisions, that it could even affect the life of the conservatee.

4. Conservatees could get scammed.

The fourth reason why you should think twice and hard about obtaining a conservatorship is that there is a possibility that you could get scammed. It always happens, whether it is friends, family, and someone that the court assigned. We must have our guard up whenever it comes to these things. There are so many instances of exploitation committed by conservators to conservatees. One instance occurs with Ms. Thelma Gum who had the court appoint one of her daughters as conservator. The daughter signs over her mother's property to herself and it is later found that she is financially exploiting her mother so she was removed.

5. Conservatees have absolutely no way of making decisions.

According to the definition of "conservatorship", it is stated that they are created for those who cannot make decisions on their own and need assistance when it comes to them. Such decisions include, healthcare and financial decisions. This ultimately could put the conservatee's life in danger. The conservator could be wanting to inflict danger through making decisions. Another case occurs in Texas where Mr. Eric Watts was working as a professional conservator and then plead guilty to ten counts of theft. He was stealing from elderly and disabled people as well as tampering with their records.

6. It's ultimately a violation of one's human rights.

At the end of the day, people's lives and rights are at stake when it comes to obtaining conservatorships. You are unable to make your own choices. Whether it is financial decisions or decisions about your health, someone else will be in charge of all that and you will never know if someone is plotting against you for their own personal gain. it is a violation against your human rights and you are at risk of being used for your assets until everything that you own is gone to the conservator.

7. It does not allow for much freedom.

You are not allowed to decide for yourself once you get a conservatorship. The freedom that you once had where every choice that you made on your own is completely gone. You are at risk of having false decisions made under your name by your conservator. It is as if you are stripped off of any freedom that you once held on to just because the court deems you to be unfit of making choices on your own. You basically have a guardian as an adult making your decisions and basically letting you do things you might not want to take part in.
