3 reasons why you should choose radiation oncology as a profession

If you've always been attracted to the health field, but still don't know which specialty to focus on, this article is for you. Whether you're in Secondary 5 or simply in the midst of a career change, I will be able to convince you that radiation oncology is the perfect field or...no, for you. After several attempts in various fields, it is finally in this health field that my choice was made and I would have liked to have known about this little-known career choice long before.

1. A little-known profession, which deserves to be known more.

Radiotherapy treatment machine (LINAC)

Radiotherapy is a little-known field for people in general. People who are familiar with the profession of radiation oncology technologist are usually peopled who are or have been witness to a person, with cancer, because yes we treat cancer. Although few people are familiar with the field, radiation therapy is a profession that is on the cutting edge of technology and continues to evolve, as evidenced by the great technological advances of the last decade. The profession is therefore an amalgam of computer work, patient/caregiver relations, but also a job where the psychological and empathy are at the heart of our daily work days. Radiation oncology technologists are involved in the day-to-day treatment of cancer patients. We accompany them daily in their illness. Thoroughness, listening, communication, empathy and teamwork are the skills needed to succeed.

2. Working conditions

Working conditions of nurses.

When people think of jobs in the health field, they usually think of nurses or doctors. Personally, and especially over the last few years, I unfortunately associate these professions with the bad working conditions that we keep hearing about like compulsory overtime, bad management, poor pay, lack of personnel, etc. It is therefore necessary to reassure you and to confirm that radiation oncology is one of the rare professions where we work in a hospital, but under good conditions. For example, the working hours are from Monday to Friday. Our departments are open from 7:00 to 18:00, so no night or evening work is required. We have relatively small departments so the management of these is generally well-structured. We always work as a team, which I think is a big plus. In fact, I believe that our work environment is the basis of our fulfillment in it. Working in the health field is a vocation, and poor working conditions can then take over and push someone to lose their passion for their job.

3. Well-structured internships
