7 Ways Coffee Increases Academic Performance

Coffee has become one of the most liked drinks among teens and young adults. Coffee shops have become very popular around the states and personally, I have tried 49 local coffee shops across the United States. Coffee is known to give you energy due to the caffeine in it and there are many other benefits to drinking coffee but there are also disadvantages to it as well. Many people have a routine where coffee has become an essential part of and some can't even go a day without drinking coffee or having coffee in their system. It is known that coffee has some benefits but specifically academically there are 7 important ways coffee can improve academic performance

1. It tastes good!

If you like bitter coffee, expresso is the way to go; like sweeter coffee? a white mocha latte is the way to go. There are so many different ways to drink coffee that you can keep trying more combinations and keep experimenting with coffee every day! There has to be one combination that is to your taste that you will be obsessed with and you can try the way new coffee shops do your favorite drink. Going to new coffee shops puts you in an environment where most people are being productive so you can be productive too!

2. Coffee shops force you to be productive

Coffee shops have become a lot like a modern library nowadays. Adults go to work at coffee shops and students go to study at coffee shops as well. This makes an environment where everyone is working one way or another which forces you to be productive since you don't want to be the one person in the coffee shop that isn't being productive. Since most coffee shops' hours are very long you can stay at coffee shops all day and do all of your work and have some tasty coffee and free wifi as well!

3. Coffee makes you mentally alert

There are many studies that show that about 1-6 cups of coffee can make you more mentally alert. Being mentally alert can help you academically since it will keep you focused in class and engaged in the topic as well. This will help you make better connections on the topic you are learning which will make you perform better in exams. Rather than being groggy during a morning or night class, being mentally alert in exams and in classes will help you understand the topics faster and it will also help you recall them better as well.

4. Coffee improves your brain's health

Studies have shown that having caffeine daily is shown to reduce Alzheimer's and dementia in the future. Studies showed that caffeine improves neural connections, therefore, helping with memory. An improved neural connection helps consolidate thoughts and ideas that may be taught in class, therefore, helping with cementing all topics and new elements we learn in class. Improved neural connections also mean having faster neural responses and more neural connections that would be missed otherwise. Decreasing the chances of Alzheimer's and dementia consolidates memories in the human brain and improves the recall of memories as well.

5. Coffee gives you energy

Coffee contains caffeine which has been proven to give us energy and make us more alert. As a college student majoring in Neuroscience that is something that I need a lot during my all-nighter study sessions for exams. The ability to be awake for a long time helps us study for longer and complete assignments on time when we have many other commitments in our lives. The limited time of the day makes it that sometimes we have to give sleep up and to do that the energy caffeine provides is essential.

6. Caffeine can scientifically make you happier!

Caffeine affects dopamine receptors in the brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that affects our mood changes. Dopamine is the neurotransmitter that makes us happy. As we drink coffee and we get caffeine in our body the dopamine receptors are stimulated therefore increasing the dopamine being released in our brain, making us happy. Being happy can help you retain more information since you are not distracted by negative feelings or emotions. Increased dopamine in your brain will not only make you happy but it also cements memories into our brain helping us retain more information

7. Creating consistent states of being improves memories

As I have explained above, there are many ways coffee helps academically but the most important part is how consistent all these emotions are. When we create consistent emotions when learning, studying, and recalling are shown to improve memory. When you are happy and energized in class when studying and at a test helps you remember the information you learned in class and studied as well. Being in similar environments and also having the same state of mind increase recall and recognition of information we've already been exposed to in the same state of mind

Conclusion

Caffeine has been shown to have many health benefits to the human body. Not only the fact that it tastes good and makes you happy should want to make you some coffee, but also it prevents several cancers! It has been shown to improve academic performance in students in many ways that are significant enough to make it very popular among students. Improved memory, happiness, recall, and neural connections help students learn and perform better in tests as well. Coffee shops provide free wifi, delicious coffee, and a good environment to complete all the work you may have as well as study for upcoming exams in a productive environment
