1. Determine deviant behavior

Deviant behavior is any type of behavior that is different from the moral norms of society. It is normally determined by the individual's personality, physical features, and psychological background. This type of behavior is often seen with people who have had psychological trauma from early on in their childhood. In some cases, these people can become psychopaths (lack of feelings or empathy for something or someone) or develop some type of personality disorder later in life.

2. Experimenting methods

It wasn't until the 1980s that it was decided to conduct criminological experiments on people or in this case a group of people. In 1986, the Minneapolis police department participated in an experiment involving the arrests of domestic violence situations. When the police would encounter any sort of domestic violence, the choice of arresting the offender was randomly chosen on sight. The results showed that when the offender had been arrested and spent at least one night in jail, the chance that the incident would repeat itself against the same victim was reduced by 50%. This experiment helped raise awareness for other police forces across the United States as well as helping the progress of criminology and criminal justice.

3. Choosing your path in criminology

The beauty of criminology is that it has multiple career choices. From criminal law to forensic psychology, this field of study has the best of both worlds coming from sociology and psychology. Whether you want to become a police officer, a detective, or a scene of crime officer, these careers have one thing in common, the understanding of crime. Without criminology, we wouldn't be capable of comprehending everything that hides behind a crime. For instance, we would not be able to determine if there is a motive in a homicide or if there is any psychological motivations in a crime without criminology.
