A psychologist perform examinations and research to study all the aspects of the mind. People come to see them for any problem related to how they feel emotionally or because of mental health issues.


Where do you work?

A clinical psychologist can work in many places but for most of them private practice is the goal. They can also work in hospital, schools or in any type of work environment. There's also psychologist who only do research. This type of psychologist don't see any patient, and they work in labs.


Why did you choose that job?

I chose that job because, I've always wanted to help people and make a difference in their life. I also love the fact that everyday is different, and you never know what problem you'll have to deal with.


Is it a popular job in your country?

There's a high demand for psychologist in my country but because it takes a Ph.D there's not a lot of people that actually practices.


Do you like your job?

I really love my job for many reasons. First of all, I like helping people and make a difference in their life. I also think that knowing how the brain works is a really cool aspect of my work. With that knowledge I can know why people are acting certain ways or if there's a biological reason why they are reacting a certain way too.

Psychologist make on average $118 000 per year in Quebec. The salary can vary a lot depending on where you work, for how long you've been working at the same place and also if you're in a private office or not.


How can i become a Psychologist?

To become a psychologist you'll have to go through 2 years of CEGEP and 5 to 7 years of university. You can't practice if you don't obtain a Ph.D.


What responsibilities do you have at work?

I have the responsibilities to make sure that my patients are comfortable with, so they can tell me how they really feel. I also have the responsibilities to make them feel a little better after every consultation and I also have to give them tricks to help them cope with their problems. I have to give them tools to fight with their mental health issues like anxiety.


What kind of illness a psychologist can treat?

It extends between serious mental health problem like schizophrenia or borderline personality disorder and more common disorder like panic attacks and anxiety or anger issues.


What age do a psychologist retire at?

A psychologist can retire whenever he wants if he's the private system but if he works for the government he can only retire around the age of 65.
