Introduction

This article is very useful for those who are unsure if they would like to pursue a career in become a veterinarian or for the ones that are curious and need some insight on what it would be like to become a veterinarian. What motivated me to write this was that at some point in my life, I was very confused on what I was going to pursue in, and I would have loved if I had a career summary like this to help me get a better idea of what I want to do.

Veterinarians provide health care services to animals, the do routine check-ups, they prevent humans from catching certain diseases carried by animals, and they also help the owners of the pet understand their pets better by giving them the right advice.

Veterinarians typically spend their day examining, diagnosing and treating animals. Their daily routine consists of check-up examinations, emergency visits, and operations of various sorts. They might also have to do human extractions. Some vets take practice into a zoo or farms, and some others work in research or in labs.


Where do veterinarians work?

Veterinarians can work in multiple work spaces. They could own their own clinic, they could work in a clinic, they could join a veterinary practice with a partner, and they could also work in laboratories.


How can I become veterinarian?

The first step is to make sure that becoming a vet is something that you want to do. Then, you're going to have to take a Pre-Veterinary Medicine program. After that, you'll have to choose a DMV (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) program take could take up to four years to complete. After your second year in Veterinary Medical School, you'll have to take the VEA (Veterinary Educational Assessment). In your fourth year, you will be able to take specialty courses. In the end, you'll just have to do the NVLE to become a licensed veterinarian. This process could up to 6-8 years to complete or more.


How much money do veterinarians make?

A veterinarian's salary will depend on their year of entry. For entry-level veterinarians, their career salaries are around $61,000; for mid-career veterinarians, their career salaries are around $84,000, for late-career veterinarians, their career salaries are around $119,000. In addition, the salaries vary from different types of veterinarians.


What kinds of additional training do veterinarians need?

After taking all of your courses to become a Veterinarian, you must pass the NAVLE exam in order to become a licensed Veterinarian.


What are the dangers of being veterinarian?

Veterinarians tend to work outdoors in any type of weather, they have to work laboratories with terrible conditions at times, they sometimes have to inspect meat packaging for diseases, and they have to examine sick animals that could have a disease. As you can tell, vets are prone to catching diseases carried by animals and could die. Those are the dangers of being a veterinarian.


What are the chances that veterinarians will be replaced by robots soon?

Robots could easily replace veterinarians but the chances of that happened are somewhat slim. AI's help enhance the capability of taking care and diagnosing patients, they're efficient, they can identify areas of suspected abnormality, and they alleviate human bias. However, the expertise of a Veterinarian is always needed and could never be replaceable in interpreting data. Veterinarians can quickly attribute diagnostic conclusions and more accurately.


What age do veterinarians retire at?

In Canada, the age of retirement of most Veterinarians in 2018 is 65 years old. However, they are people who retire before or after the age of 65.
