Example of a nurse who works evenings on a cardiology unit: She arrives on the unit, she takes her report, then she checks the files of her patients to see if there are any new prescriptions, or modifications from the doctor. She makes sure she has an overview of her patients because she is responsible for their safety and health. She then goes to see each of her patients and assesses them from head to toe to make sure everything is correct. She talks with her patients, asks them if they need anything in particular, makes sure they don't have any pain or discomfort. She will then prepare her medications for the evening and distribute the right medication to each one. In the meantime, she also has to make sure that her notes to the charts are written and that they reflect the state of health of her patients. For the rest of the evening, she will make sure everyone is okay. She will then be able to help her colleagues till the end of her shift.
There is plenty of room for a nurse to work. The majority of nurses work in a hospital. However, there are several possibilities. They can work in a residence for the elderly, children hospital, a school, a CLSC, a prison, for the government, or even become a travel nurse and work all over the world. The advantage of this career, his that everyone has the opportunity to chose whatever they like.
There are two ways to become a nurse. You can do a 3 years DEC at CEGEP or do 2 years of Natural Science and next go to university. A nurse who has done her DEC at CEGEP can also go to university to specialize. With the obtaining of your diploma, you will have to pass the exam of OIIQ (Ordre des infirmiers et infirmières du Quebec) in order to become a certified nurse
For a college graduates nurse, it starts at $25.41/hour and can go up to $41.39/hour
The nursing profession allows us to learn every day. There are additional training that are given every year, in order to be updated and learn new techniques. For example, a new machine for a solute or a new medication that we wish to provide to the population.
The danger to nursing is stress and burnout. Nurses are responsible for the lives and safety of patients. They must ensure that they are constantly focused and do not make fatal mistakes that could cost them someone's life. They also have a lot of patient to they charge, There also is the mandatory overtime that becomes a source of burnout in the long run. Nurses can work more than 55-60 hours per week.
There is very little chance that robots will take the place of nurses. It takes clinical judgment to be able to care of people. Robots may be able to do technical things, but they will never replace the judgment and listening skills of nurses.
In Quebec, in the public sector, you can retire without a penalty at age 60, or even at age 55 if you have 35 years of service.
In conclusion, it is clear that nursing as a career requires a lot of skills, experience, clinical judgment and moral support, but on the other hand it is a very exciting job, which allows us to work in different areas related to health, it is always rewarding to see that we have contributed to someone happiness. I am currently in my last session of my program.I am graduating this summer. I am considering working in a children's hospital and travel around the world and help families.
