Engineers can specialize in a variety of specialties, from aerospace to agricultural to petroleum, and everything in between. Almost all of these specialties involve some laboratory research, project management and on site, outdoor work.
Depending on what stage of their career they are at, engineers will often do some research and innovation, whether it be in a super advanced lab or by making calculations in an office. They are also often pushed into project management and administrative work. In some fields, engineers can expect to spend quite a bit of time outside, supervising mines or construction sites, or even petroleum extraction sites. A typical day depends on your field and what you like to do, whether it is to be in an office or to travel around the country. No matter where you end up working, you can expect a lot of computer work, as engineers usually work with very advanced software to accomplish all sorts of tasks.
Engineers usually work in a lab, an office or outdoors. Given this current pandemic, a lot of engineers who would usually work in an office can work from home. Some engineers love getting to work in the safety of an office, while others prefer travelling and getting to work outside. Where you will work will depend on your personal preferences, and the field of engineering in which you end up working in.
To become an engineer, you need a bachelor’s degree in engineering. You need to have followed advanced mathematics, science and physics classes in high school and college. You can work entry level jobs with a bachelor’s degree, but a lot of engineers choose to get a master’s degree to get higher paying jobs and do more research.
Depending on your engineering degree, personal skills and experience in a given field, the salary of en engineer can vary quite a bit. However, you can expect to make quite a bit of money as an engineer, as pay can range anywhere from $46K to $139K per year.
Engineers need to stay up to date with the innovation and new technologies that can be developed in their fields. Such continuous training can be sought by the engineers themselves, on their time, but it’s often given by the employer. Employers have all the right reasons to keep their engineers well-versed in innovation, as a well-trained and up to date engineer is at his best.
As engineers progress through their careers, a lot of them end up in project management or administrative positions. That can lead to a lot of built up boredom with their job and many engineers end up switching fields or quitting their job. Engineers that work on site and outdoors are exposed to the dangers of the elements and the physical risks of something going wrong on an oil rig, for example.
The chances are low to medium. Engineers use a lot of computers and artificial intelligence to accomplish multiple tasks and calculations. While the human perspective is still very important in the field, we can say that some engineers, in some ways, are already being replaced by robots…
Engineers usually retire at the time they see fit. Some will retire from traditional 9 to 5 jobs only to end up founding their own company or firm and working as much as they want instead. Others will save up a lot of their hard-earned pay checks and take early retirement, or dedicate the rest of their lives to research. In the end, almost all engineers can expect to retire with a wide range of experiences and knowledge acquired over decades of evolving technology and innovation.
