In 2020, being a Police Officer can be very challenging. Our society is constantly changing as much as the perception that the society has about Police Officers. It's not a job for everyone, you have to be extremely prepared for it.
In general, Police Officer has to make sure that the society is going well. They have to keep public order and make sure that properties and lives are protected. Also, they make sure that the society respects the laws, and they give tickets if not. A Police Officer, in general, have to be alert all the time and be prepared for any eventuality. In other words, they fight against the crime.
Every shift will start with a briefing from the Sergeant. This is where Police Officers learn new information about what is going on in their city and what are the tasks they need to do to resolve the specific problematic. Usually, it takes 15 min. After the briefing, Police Officers are given an assigned sector that they will patrol. There is not such a thing as a typical day, because depending on the 911 calls, they never know what they will be doing and certainly at what time their shifts will be done. Every day is different. Even when they don't have any call for them, they patrol the city, doing prevention, talking to the citizens.
Police Officers work for different organisations. For example, in Quebec there is the SQ, the SPVM who are two big organisations. They can also work for cities, such as regions. They all have different advantages and disadvantages. As a Police Officer, you just have to know what are you willing to do and to sacrifice. You have to analyse the advantages vs disadvantages and make to right choice for you.
You have to be sure the law enforcement is the right path for you, does it passionate you? You have to have good grades in elementary school. Then, you will apply to be in Police Technology at College, where you'll be for 3 years minimum. Finally, if you live in Quebec, you have to go the ENPQ for 15 weeks. There, the teachers prepare the students to be in the real life of a Police Officer.
It depends on the grade that you have but it can be between $40 000- $120 000.
They have much additional training to keep them updated, it can be about drugs, racism, ethnic communities. We know that the laws is constantly changes so the police Officer has to be up to date. They also have to do a calibration gun test each year to make sure they they still are in control of their capacities in using a gun.
They never with who they will have to deal with. They could be talking with someone who's hiding a gun. Police Officers put themselves in many dangerous situations in order to keep the citizens protected. Every single day, they risk their own lives for being Police Officers.
I personally don't think that it's possible because in order to be a good Police Officer, you need the human contact with the society. It's the key to good interventions.
Police officers can usually retire with a pension after twenty years of working, but there isn't a right or wrong answer. They decide of the right time, if the judge that they made a difference, and they are happy of the way their careers have been.
I'm currently still in College, I'm in my second year in Police Technology. I can't wait to be done with the College and the ENPQ, so I can finally be a Police Officer. My goal is to be working for the SPVM and to be working with my parents. They're waiting to take their retirements, so they can work at least 1 shift with me.
