I am writing this article because I did think about becoming a dentist and I wish I could have read a small article like this one to learn everything important to this career instead of searching hours to find information on the internet.
Being a dentist, is all especially about communication. People usually show up with anxiety and discomfort. They can tell you they don't like dentists. So, as you carry out your job, you also have to be able to earn your patients trust. You also have to be able to manage anxiety. Once your client base and reputation are built up, you will be able to have a satisfying and foreseeable life.
Dentists are oral doctors. They first started with oral health. Now, dentists are taking care of oral health cosmetics. Therefore, we can say that dentist are preventative doctors. Regardless of that, they also have to educate people on how to preserve their oral health.
A dentist's typical day is about 7 to 10 hours long and look a lot like any other doctors day. They promote dental health, and work with patients. In a typical day, a dentist will carry out dental exams, fill cavities and extract teeth. If a dentist is incorporated, they will handle some paperwork too.
Being a dentist includes working with other people like dental assistants or dental hygienist. They all need to work at the same place. So, most dentists work at a Dental Clinic.
First, to become a dentist, you need a bachelor's degree before your admission to dental school. Then, you need a doctoral degree in dental medicine or dental surgery. Dental medicine and dental surgery have the same education. The awarded degree is chosen by universities. Those programs are 4 years long and are divided in 2 parts. After that, you can choose whether you want a dental specialization.
There are two types of dentists: incorporated dentists and salaried dentists. The median salary in 2019 of salaried dentists was $155,600. The salary of an incorporated dentist varies a lot, but they make more money than salaried dentists.
After graduation from dental surgery or dental medicine programs, dentist do not need any additional training. However, if someone chooses to specialize in a dentistry area, they will need additional training that usually includes a residency. Those specializations take 2 to 6 years to be completed.
Being a dentist can be really hard on the moral. Even though you have studied as much as any other doctors, society will never give as much respect as they give to others. Most dentists are disappointed with their chosen career when they start working. In fact, everyday people will say something like “No offense, but I hate dentists” and it is hard morally.
There isn't a lot of chances that dentists will be replaced by robots soon. In fact, being a dentist asks for critical judgment. They are procedures, that can be avoided depending on several factors like time. Those judgments can not be done by robots because they need human rationality and perspective. Therefore, the chances that robots will replace dentists are small.
Retirement is something really important in a person life. Most dentists start thinking about retirement around 60. From the day they think to retire, they usually continue working for about 4 years. At the age of 65, most dentist did retire. Furthermore, dentists retire with a great amount of money.
To conclude, I am still thinking about becoming a dentist. This a great career that I think will be interesting. Next year, I will apply to university and dental medicine will probably be a program I'll apply for.
