Being a psychologist is a really mentally difficult, but really gratifying job. Psychologist study all the aspects of a person's mind, to help them to solve their problems. It is an emotionally demanding job, but by helping others psychologists receive a lot of satisfaction in their job.
Their work can involve individuals, groups, families and as well as larger organizations in government and industry. In most cases, psychologists work in doing research, in practicing the profession or in teaching topics that are related to how people think, feel and behave. They often work in diagnosing mental health problems (depression, anxiety, phobias, etc) or preventing them. Psychologists can also help people for marital or family relationship problems, social and cultural behaviors and attitudes. In other words, psychologists can guide a person towards creating a healthy relationship between the individual and the many groups of which he or she is part. A psychologist listens to a person's problems and gives it professional and none judgmental solutions to get through it.
In a normal clinical psychologist day, the doctor will usually perform a large range of tasks such as interviewing patients, conducting assessments, giving diagnostic tests, performing psychotherapy, and administering programs.
Some psychologists work primarily as researchers and as teachers in universities. Others work as specialists in governmental and non-governmental organizations or as practitioners in hospitals, schools, clinics, correctional facilities, employee assistance programs and private offices. Other psychologists work as consultants to corporations and various organizations. Many of them are active in both research and practice.
To become a psychologist you need to be ready to spend a lot of years in school. You need to obtain a doctoral degree which represents between five and seven years of university. To get this distinguished degree, you need to complete a dissertation based on original research. Before you begin this research, you must complete coursework in quantitative research methods, statistics, and computers. Before the degree is completed, you can start working with patient under supervision and at least another year of supervised work experience is required afterward as well. Besides the years of study and internships, psychologists offering patient care must be certified and licensed by the state in which they intend to practice. These licensing exams are standardized tests designed to ensure that candidates have both knowledge of the field and appropriate personal qualities to exercise the profession.
The psychologist’s salary can vary depending on experience or workplace, however, the average salary in Canada in 2019 was $80,370 per year or an hourly wage of $38.64. The salary of a psychologist may also differ based on the type of psychologist they are. For example, a clinical psychologists earns a salary that ranges from $50k to $209k per year, while a neuropsychologist earns a salary that ranges from $43k to $173k each year.
Psychologists attend many conferences or additional training during their career to assure that they are always up to date with the newest research. For example, APA’s Advanced Training Institutes is an organisation that helps psychological scientists and advanced graduate students to stay on the cutting edge of emerging technologies and state-of-the-art research methodologies. With this institution, psychologists can learn about aging research with diverse racial and ethnic groups, social network research with culturally diverse populations, machine learning perspectives and other really interesting topics.
Being a psychologist is an extremely emotionally demanding job because they listen to intensely emotional problems on a regular basis, so it can be hard for them to keep a good mood. Also, violence, or the threat of violence from patients, is likely to be experienced by all psychologists working with individuals presenting mental health problems at some time in their career.
One of the most wide-ranging and influential surveys of the future of employment, by Oxford economists Carl Benedikt Frey and Michael Osborne, rated the probability that psychology could be automated in the near future at a mere 0.43%.
Psychologists in Canada retire at the age of 60-65 years old. Some of them may regret not having finished their research when they retire or not having helped all of their patients. Some retired psychologists can now find that they are useless because they are used to helping people.
