Introduction

This article is a summary of what does a sales rep actually do. A lot of stereotype are associated to this profession. My goal is to break those stereotype and inform people who are interested in becoming a sales rep.


What is it like to be a sales rep?

Basically, it can be quite a roller-coaster. Being a sales rep can be rewarding and very fun. You can feel like you are on top of the world when you close out a big deal or reach your sales goal. With that said, you also have days were you are going to get rejected by clients and miss your sales goal. Those days can be quite hard to take. This is why a sales person needs a lot of emotional stamina in order to continue to grind and be positive. Being a sales person is filled with communication and teamwork. You are going to be using your communication skills with your clients and your colleagues. You also need to be dress nicely.


What do sales rep do?

In short, a sales rep is representing a certain company when it comes down to the sales. He is required to sale deals with other companies. He searches potential clients and pitch them the product. The best technique in sales is to create a need for the client.


What do sales rep do on a typical day?

A sales rep gets up early in the morning (6 a.m.). He checks his emails and eats a full breakfast. Depending on the plan of the day, a sales rep will often start the day with a group meeting to talk about what the goal is for today. After the meeting, the sales rep is going to go on the road to meet up with his clients. On his way to meetups, he is going to make phone calls with other clients or colleagues. After a full day on the road, a sales rep will come back to the office to inform his sales manager of what he has done today. In the evenings, a sales rep can right emails to be pro-active but generally, sales reps relax after a full day at work to be sharp the next day.


Where do sales rep work?

They work for big companies. Their workplace can be the office, restaurants (for meet-ups with clients), at home or at the office.


How can I become a sales rep?

Most of the time, sales rep requires some basic background like having a high school certificate. But most of the time, to be a sales rep, you need to excel in your interview. Managers do not really mind about degrees and certifications. If you have a big ability of communication, you can be hired in a company in no time.

In average, you can make $80 000 to $130 000.


What kinds of additional training do sales rep need?

The sales manager has the task to build your communication skills with your team. They do that by organizing team build up activities. Those activities can be an escape room for example. It can also be a team sport activity.


What are the dangers of being a sales rep?

This job doesn't have big dangers. But, you are managing millions of dollars' contracts and the consequences of an error made by a sales rep regarding a contract can be legally very bad.


What are the chances that sales rep will be replaced by robots soon?

None because the job itself requires human contact to create a relationship with your client.


What age do sales rep retire at?

This is really the sales rep choice. You are making your money depending on your sales. Basically, the longer you work, bigger is your clientele so some reps keep working till they are in their 70s.
