I am a student in cinema, and I can trust me, without editor, a movie would be pieces of clips without story. You can start to be an assistant editor, a colorist; the person who adding colors on the images and create a tone to the movie. You also can start to be on a others lower rank job on the editing department. For all jobs on a set, you have to start in the bottom and climb the ladders.
The average annual for a movie editor is around 60 000$ every year. If you are a movie editor from a big blockbuster could touch more than 100 000$ by years. It's a lot. It's very depends of how the movie is popular.
In conclusion, to be a good editor, you have to start in the bottom. More you practice and do project, more you have the chance to go on bigger project and make more money.
