Like Mr Edelman said in his article, there are multiple ways to become a filmmaker. He then lists out the three easiest ways to start your career in the industry. The first one is volunteering. By volunteering, you are going to meet people that are already working in the industry. Those new connections can become really useful in the future because it can lead you to a real job offer. Volunteering can also help you to gain some knowledge on filmmaking. The second way to become a filmmaker according to Mr Edelman is by practicing on your own. He's asking you to practice shooting different camera angle and editing it. By doing so, you're going to develop skill that can only be acquire by practicing it. The third way to start in the industry is by studying. Studying in filmmaking doesn't necessarily mean to go to film school. You can study by watching films on your own, or you can also do it by reading books or watching interviews of professional filmmakers.
The main concerns you should have when you become a filmmaker is the job opportunities. You are probably not going to find a job right after College. In his article, Mr Eldeman describe the job by the word "unpredictable". By that word, the Producer mean a lot of things. First of all, you're not going to have a stable schedule. You are going to work many hour per day to meet your deadline and objective. Secondly, it is "unpredictable" because you never know if you are going to be successful even if you are very talented. Only few people have succeeded to be as successful to be a full time filmmaker without living a precarious lifestyle.
