I think that this article is useful for the students who want to learn a bit more about this technique since it's not very well known but yet it is very interesting and the profession of a medical electrophysiology technician is also diversified.
This technique has three main components: the cardiac part, the neurological part and also the muscular part. At the start of their career, young technicians will often perform resting ECGs while walking around the hospital but with experience, several different types of test can be performed by the technician. It's also possible to work in a private clinic where the tasks are a bit different than in an hospital.
A technician performs, among other things, electrocardiograms at rest or during exercise, electroencephalograms and electromyograms. Technicians also work in polysomnography
The work is mainly composed of ecg, eeg and emg but the installation of heart monitor is also part of the daily tasks.
Most of them work in hospitals, but it is also possible to work in private clinics where patients are generally more independent. some people will prefer to work in these clinics also because the environment is less stressful than the hospital.
You have to do the three years technique which is given at the Ahuntsic College.
On average, around 50,000$ a year
Once the 3 years program is completed, the technician is fully prepared to work, the technique obviously teaches how to perform examinations on patients but it also explains how the devices work and how to take care of patients in the hospital and help others employees with their tasks. If a technician wants to train a little more, it is always possible to take courses in order to learn how to analyze holters or cardiostats for example (these are heart monitors)
Obviously there is a slight risk involved in working with electrical devices. Working with the public also means sometimes having to deal with aggressive people but it is still not a very dangerous job.
In fact, there is not a great risk since it is necessary to be very precise in this profession and the fact that it is in the medical field implies that the patients will always need other humans to treat them and to diagnose them.
Well, this decision is obviously up to the technicians and they can retire when they wish but on average retirement is taken between 55 and 65 years old
It's a job that deserves to be known and it's a great opportunity for someone who wants to work in the medical field without having to do major studies
