What is it like to be police officer?

Working as a police officer can be a fascinating job but sometimes, the job can present negative aspects of life. Today, I will show you guys the typical day of a police officer and I will make sure to give you a lot of pertinent information since this is my future job. The first thing that you need to know is that working as a police officer is putting yourself at risk to help other citizens that are facing dangers.

What do police officers do?

Usually, an officer will respond to many calls in his daily shift because people always need help 24/7. Most of the time, officers are doing some traffic stops where they pull over the car of any citizen, introduce themselves, and verified that the driver has a valid driver's license and a proof of insurance. If it's not the case, the citizen will receive a ticket and the price can vary between a hundred dollars and thousands of dollars depending on the infraction that has been committed. Also, on the other hand, police officers can respond to calls where the life of citizens is in danger. For example, we often see crashes with injuries on the road and since all the police officers are trained to give first aid and basic life help, they do whatever they can to reduce the pain of the victims if the paramedics have not arrived yet. When the citizens are taking in charge by other first-line responders, the officers need to write a clear and well-developed report to explain the situation by giving some crucial elements.

What do police officers do on a typical day?

A usual shift always starts by getting dressed in the police uniform. In fact, all the agents take the time to inspect their uniforms to make sure that all their equipment is working in their utility belt. By doing this, the officers are able to prepare their mentality for the day ahead and realized that they are no longer at home, they are now serving and protecting citizens. When this step is done, the officers are having a brief meeting before the shift starts with their sergeant. He will inform his agents if they have to take care of special assignments or if any alert has been identified since the last shift. After this small reunion, police officers can now go to their car and start looking if they have all the material that they need to do their job properly. The necessary equipment, such as flares, first aid kits, and fire extinguishers need to be in the car and in good condition. Now, it is time for the agent to open his radio and wait for any call from the dispatch center. Usually, an officer will respond to many calls in his daily shift because people always need help 24/7.

Where do police officers work?

Police officers can work in very different places. Some of them can work most of the time in the police station to fill out some reports and others can be on the road during all their shift. It is important that the population see a large amount of police officers in most of the areas of the city so they can feel protected, away from any danger.

How can I become police officer?

Here, in Quebec, you can become a police officer by doing a 3 years program in cegep. In the area of Montreal, here are couple of institutions where you can do your police technology: Ahuntsic college, John Abbott college and cegep de Maisonneuve. When your training is done, you have one final step to do which is having an intensive final training at the National Police School of Quebec during 6 months. Futur officers will learn how to drive an emergency vehicle, how to defend themselves properly and how to use a gun. When you graduate from this school, you are now considered as a law enforcement agent and you can start applying to any police corporation in Canada.

How much money do police officers make?

In the beginning, an officer will make approximately 44 000$ a year and with some experience, the usual salary is 83 000$ a year in the area of Montreal. If you become a sergeant or any other figure of authority in the organization, you can easily do more than 100 000$ a year.

What kinds of additional training do police officers need?

Throughout their careers, police officers can often receive some training about how to control aggressive people, how to reduce racism in the organization, and any other formation to make sure that everybody in the organization is doing fine even if officers see a lot of atrocities during their shifts.

What are the dangers of being police officer?

A lot of dangers are present in the job of a police officer. In fact, it's not rare to see agents with some terrible wounds during an intervention because you can work with uncooperative people who can hurt you. Unfortunately, a couple of officers are dying each year from people who are shooting them, car accidents and fights that can cause death. Some people hate police officers so when they have the occasion to attack them, they do it with no mercy.

What are the chances that police officers will be replaced by robots soon?

The chances of police officers getting replaced by robots soon are very low because technology will never have the same competencies as a police officer. Let's be honest, how can a robot express some empathy towards a woman who got physically attacked by her husband? How can a robot help people in a car accident? These small questions prove that robots will never be as effective as a real police officer.

What age do police officers retire at?

Usually, most of the police officers retire after 30 years of service which is around 50-55 years old.

Conclusion

Finally, being a police officer is a real opportunity because even if you put your life at risk every day, helping people in need is in my sense, one of the best feelings in the world. I am now completing my second year of training at Ahuntsic college and I will graduate from Ahuntsic in 2022. I hope to become a police officer at the beginning of 2023 even if I will still be very young. I hope you guys enjoyed my text.
