It is not an easy job. It is not a job for everybody because we are the first to arrive at the scene of an emergency.
We give Pre-hospital Emergency Care to the people who called for help. We help the people in different ways. It depends on what they need. You can think of any situations why you could call an ambulance, and we will give emergency care in this situation like for example a heart attack, a difficulty to breath or a car accident
The most beautiful thing about this job is that everyday is different, and we don't know what we are going to do. It is an everyday surprise. You will never get bored because every call is different, and we never know what's coming. The only thing that we know is that we will have a lot of patient and that we will bring them to a hospital after.
Another beautiful thing of this job is that we work everywhere. The location of the call is where I work. So, I can work in an infinite possibility of location. You work for a city normally, so you can receive a call anywhere in the city. You can decide to work in big city or in a campaign. It depends on what do you prefer.
To become a paramedic in the province of Quebec, you have to do the Pre-hospital Emergency Care program in a Cegep like College Ahuntsic for example. The program is three years. After the three years, you have to get board certified. After that, you can work as a paramedic in the city of your choice in Quebec.
The salary really depends on how many hours you are doing per week. Normally we can begin between 40 000 to 50 000, and we can go up to 100 000 per year with the experience.
The medicine changes every year. So, every year we have to do additional training. For example, we can have a training on a new drug that we will give.
We have a lot of danger in this profession. We can have a patient that wants to hurt us. We can be injured while we drive across the red light if we make an accident. We can be injured in an unstable scene. This job is also a lot of stress on our body.
It is impossible to replace a paramedic by robots soon. We have to do life and death with fast decision and a robot is not able to do that. When we are called for a psychological problem a robot will not have any empathy.
It really depends on the paramedic. A lot of paramedic quit after ten years and some do it all their life. The average age of retirement is at 60.
