In this field of work, there is no typical day. Every day is different from the other because the type of calls differs from every situation. A usual shift always starts by getting dressed in the police uniform. In fact, all the agents take the time to inspect their uniforms to make sure that all their equipment is working in their utility belt. By doing this, the officers are able to prepare their mentality for the day ahead and realized that they are no longer at home, they are now serving and protecting citizens. When this step is done, the officers are having a brief meeting before the shift starts with their sergeant. He will inform his agents if they have to take care of special assignments or if any alert has been identified since the last shift. After this small reunion, police officers can now go to their car and start looking if they have all the material that they need to do their job properly. The necessary equipment, such as flares, first aid kits, needs to be in the car and in good condition. Now, it is time for the agent to open his radio and wait for any call from the dispatch center. Usually, an officer will respond to many calls in his daily shift because people always need help 24/7.

To be a police officer in Quebec, you can become a police officer by doing a 3 years program in the CEGEP between a Police Tech (DEC) and a certificate of Police Tech. There are a few public colleges, where you can do your Police Technology. Ahuntsic College, CEGEP de Maisonneuve, and John Abbott College. Then, you must follow a harsh training of fifteen weeks at the Police School. When you graduate from this school, you are now considered a law enforcement agent and you can start applying to any police corporation in Canada.
In the beginning, an officer will make approximately $45 000 a year and with some experience, the usual salary is $85000 a year. If you become a sergeant or any other figure of authority in the organization, you can easily do more than $120 000 a year with the extra time.
Throughout their careers, police officers can often receive some training about how to control aggressive people, how to reduce racism in the organization, and any other formation to make sure that everybody in the organization is doing fine even if officers see a lot of atrocities during their shifts. Also, Police need gun training and law training. Even those who already work for the police, often go to special places made for the police to practice their shooting. In addition, the police must inform themselves about the laws, because each year the laws change.
Being a police officer needs a lot of preparations. It's dangerous work because anything can happen. You never know, a suspect might hit or kick us while trying to escape. If the suspect is armed, he could shoot us as it happens to some police officers. Also, there are a lot of dangers are present in the job of a police officer. In fact, it's not rare to see agents with some terrible wounds during an intervention because you can work with uncooperative people who can hurt you. Unfortunately, a couple of officers are dying each year from people who are shooting them, car accidents, and fights that can cause death. Some people hate police officers so when they have the occasion to attack them, they do it with no mercy.
From my point of view, the chances of police officers getting replaced by robots soon are very low because technology will never have the same competencies as a police officer. In our society, citizens need a real person who can understand them and have human interaction. However, speeding tickets are filmed by cameras and sent automatically by mail when a driver exceeds the limit. Finally, the way of introducing robots in policing could play a role just as it will in other employment contexts. This means that increasing automation will replace some traditional policing altogether. As a result, police officers will face a deskilling problem: the prospect of losing some of the core skills we associate with policing.
At first, most police officers retire after 30 years of service which is around 50-55 years old. They will acquire a lot of essentials soft skills. For example, Empathy, Compassion, Nonverbal Communication, Active Listening, Adaptability, Building Trust and way more.
Finally, I am now completing my second year of training at Ahuntsic College and I will graduate from Ahuntsic in 2024. I hope to become a police officer at the beginning of 2025. In fact, being a police officer is a real opportunity because even if you put your life at risk every day, helping people in need is in my sense, one of the best feelings in the world.
