On a typical day counselors have many responsibilities. First, they can have group and private sessions. Private sessions are a one-on-one therapy for helping mentally and apply a diagnosis and group sessions are more of an exchange between multiple clients to share their story and help each other. Substance abuse counselors can also have to do a crisis intervention because these can often happen. They also have to document the client progress.
Addiction counselors work mainly in hospitals and addiction treatments facility. They can also work privately at home.
A bachelor's degree in counseling, psychology or a related field is required to become a substance abuse counselor. A person that wants to do this job should also have a state license or certification. In addition, two years of experience in individuals and groups counseling is demanded.
On a daily basis, substance abuse counselors work with peoples that struggles with many problems, they can be not ready to recover, relapsing and some of the client unfortunately pass away. The main danger for the worker is to be too attached to his clients and take their failure as a personal failure. Also, some of the addiction counselors can put too much pressure on themselves by wanting to help everyone. It is important, for the professional to take care of their well-being and psychological health to avoid depressions or burnout that are especially high in this job.
As you can see, substance abuse counselor is a job made for people with a good heart, great patience, and compassion. I definitely plan to go to The University of Laval and become a counselor. Whatever the challenges, I am ready to do everything in my power to help people pass through recovery because I think that nobody deserves to do that alone.
