A biochemist works in medicine, agriculture, environmental science, veterinary science industries. They study the effects of drugs, foods, allergens and many other substances on living tissues. Many of them also work on the molecular level and on gene expression.


What do biochemists do on a typical day?

Culturing, filtering, purifying, drying, weighing, and measuring substances using special instruments are some of the laboratory duties that a biochemist have usually to do on a typical workday. Forty to fifty hours a week it is usually what a biochemist have to work. Sometimes to meet dead line and attend and observe experiments a biochemist have to work on weekends.


Where do biochemists work?

A biochemist can work in labs of biotechnology company in agriculture, veterinary institute, and medical. Fifty percent of the biochemist works in university. For a full-time employee, paid holidays and vacations, insurance, and a retirement plan are common. Biochemist who work for big company may have bonuses, stock options, paid travel and expense accounts.


How can I become biochemist?

To be a biochemist and do research you need to get a Doctor’s degree. You might stay an additional two to four years to study to get an M.D. on top of your B.S. For most of the biochemists, their career beginning as research technician. To become a biochemist you have to do a lot of maths, science, and physics.


What are the dangers of being biochemist?

There’s a negative point with this profession, even if the Federal Government funds a lot of the research, new and experience scientist will experience greater difficulty winning research grants if an anticipated budget tightening lead to smaller increase in research expenditures and the newly trained scientists continues to increase.

If you like teamwork and precision, you may like biochemistry. There's a lot of work possibility, a lot of area of specialization, some good advantages, Maybe you should sometimes work on weekends but it nothing to compare to be part of the team on an exciting project.
