My name is Florence Stevanovic, and I have been studying Social Sciences for 2 years. This article could be very useful for you if you ever thought about becoming a sociologist. Added to my Social Sciences Glossary on my blog, this article is a good tool to learn the ropes. You will learn all you need to know about this job such as the tasks, the dangers, the salary and the educational background of the profession.
It is to be the seeker of solutions to social problems. A good sociologist is one who uses his know-how and his experience to arrive at a conclusion. It is also to use your eyes and your brain to interpret the challenges of today's society.
There are several avenues in the field of sociology. Generally, the job of a sociologist consists of analyzing human conduct through the relationships he maintains with his social environment. Sociologists analyze the way in which society develops through politics, education, economy, work, religion, racial and international issues. They can direct political decisions and resolve conflicts in the world by carefully analyzing the actions and interactions of people in it.
On a daily basis, their job is to do interviews and collect data from their observations depending on their specialty. Overall, they develop theories aimed at improving problems present in all possible areas such as crime, unemployment, life expectancy and racism. They write reports of observable phenomenons.
They work in all the institutions! They can work in companies in order to fully understand the needs of consumers and in schools as teachers. We find sociologists in governments, medical research youth, aid to the poor and youth centers.
You must be very patient and studious. With a baccalaureate in sociology, you can be an analyst for a company or a government. However, if you really want to open all the doors to the field of sociology, you must do a doctorate and choose the right school that gets you a foot-in-the-door at the sociologist career with internships to learn the ropes.
In US dollars, sociologists make about $90,290 per year.
Sociologists must be able to use old and new technologies and computer tools because these are the keys to precise analyzes.
The danger of being a sociologist is that you can get tired of waiting for results. Search results can take months and even years to arrive so you must love your job to wait for this long.
Computers are the most widely used tool in the career of a sociologist. With advances in technology, sociologists may have less work to do. However, their research is often qualitative which means that they require elaborate answers rather than "yes" or "no" (interviews, questionnaires). They must also anticipate human behavior better than computer tools.
Even after ten years of expertise, there are still new social problems that are possible to solve. It is possible to continue helping your society as long as you love what you are doing.
Finally, despite many years of study and extensive research, being a sociologist can make a big difference in society. I would like to have my doctorate to use technology and help companies make decisions. I will choose the University of Montreal because it offers on-the-job-training and allows interns to get superior skills that will come in handy when they become real sociologists.
