If you have ever thought about becoming a geology technician, then this article is for you. A geology technician spends a lot of time on the field collecting samples and conducting geophysical, hydrographic surveys. They also do prospecting to find interesting minerals for a future mine, exploratory drilling in a mine or on the field and logging in a core sack.
They do survey programs, they analyse maps, they assist the engineers and geologist, they supervise the preparation of rocks to laboratory tests, they assist drilling programs, coordinate crew members, etc.
They start their day with a crew meeting, then they go in a core sack were they measure core, and do a variety of test on it. In the afternoon, they take the helicopter to go on the field at a drilling station were they conduct the drillers to be sure that everything is going well.
They can work in an under grown or an open pit mine, in the field in remote areas, in a lab or in a core shack.

They have to do First Aid training, a small training to go in the helicopter, a supervised work experience training and many on-the-job training because the ways of doing vary between different compagnies.
You can get into a helicopter accident, and you can get injured by having a tendinitis because it's a really physical job. You can also fall on the field and break yourself bones.
Since it's mostly a manuel job, it's not really replaceable by AI. On the other hand, AI will probably appear in the core shacks to help the technician to analyse the core.
At the typical age of retirement that is 65 years old, but it depends what kind of task. Usually people stop doing prospection younger because it's a really physical work. Most of the time, they finish their career by doing more office tasks. Geological technicians get a lot of experience in a lot of things after their career because there are so many tasks to do in that job.
I'm now in my second year of the mining technique. My goal is to continue at university and do a baccalaureate in geology to become a geologist. I have one more year left in the technique, after I have 2 years to do my bacc, and after I want to find a job that I will like a lot.
