Psychologists can also improve patients lives by helping them with their difficulties in their social, personal or professional environment.
Psychologists will usually start their day by meeting their first patient in an office. During the counseling, they will ask questions, listen and take notes. They will do therapy sessions to try to understand the patients thoughts and emotions. At the end of the session, they will need to make a report of the appointment. If they are a private psychologist, they will also take time to schedule the next counseling. If not, their schedule will already be complete. Even if their day is mostly always the same, every patient has a different life with different symptoms making their everyday life interesting.
Psychologists can work in diverse environments. In the health facilities, they can work in clinics or hospital meanwhile in educational environments they work in schools. They can also be private psychologists meaning they will be their own boss with their own office.
To become a psychologist you need a doctorate degree that will take about five to seven years. To work in a clinic, you'll also need to work with patients while being supervised before getting the degree. You will need a license to practice your job. To have one, you will usually do standardized tests, but sometimes it is with essays and oral exams to make sure you have not only the knowledge but also the qualities to be a psychologist such as being empathetic and a good listener. There isn't a specific age when psychologists retire. Some will retire in their sixties, others will continue for a few more years. The age doesn't matter, but with all that experience you've gained a better comprehension of others' perspectives and behaviors. In the end, you will have helped people, and they will be thankful.
