They can be working in video game studio, in augmented reality or sometimes even cultural institution. Most of the time, level designer find work in big city like Montreal or Vancouvert.


How can I become a level designer?

First, you have to study your favorite games by understanding how they were made. You can also start drawing sketch of levels, and you apply what you learn from the video game you study. After, you need a good portfolio there will not be just the result but also the process of your pieces. In addition, you have to be in relation with people that work in this industry by attending to conference or by creating connection online. Finally, you need to apply a lot to get your dream job.

They can make between $50 000 and $83 000, but even more. This will depend on the studio you work with, and your experience in this career.


What kinds of additional training do level designers need?

They can learn new application to stay update that the company can be paying you to do it, or you can do it on your own. Furthermore, they can keep practicing at home to upgrade their position to become a game designer, a lead level designer or a producer.


What are the dangers of being a level designer?

One of the dangers as a level designer are to not built a good portfolio and put all your effort on getting your degree. If you did not even considerate to make a portfolio, you must do it because they will not hire you. They want to saw what you can do, and your understanding of the mechanics.


What are the chances that level designers will be replaced by robots soon?

We don't really know, but what make level designer really special is their empathy with the player because they need to experiment emotion during video games. For now, robots can not feel, so they can't take their places.


What age do level designers retire at?

There is no age to retire particularly in this industry, it is like other work, so it can be at your sixty.
