Unlike what everybody thinks, that being an accountant is boring, and they pass all their day at their desk, it's false. It's actually a job that is very dynamic, it asks you to have technical rigor, and you have a lot of human relations because you may have to work in teams.


What do accountants do?

An accountant analyze and verify the financial records and accounting documents for their clients. And they can work in three main sectors. The first sector is management accounting where accountant determine needs and make a system to satisfy those needs. After we have financial accounting where they do profitability studies and give financing advice. The third one is public accounting where accountant does the verification and certification of financial statements and develop financial strategies.


What do accountants do on a typical day?

At the start of the day, an accountant starts by processing their emails to catch up on urgent request. After that, they start planing the rest of their day to avoid oversights and meeting deadlines. For the rest of the morning, accountants focus on invoicing and bank reconciliations. In the afternoon, they do follow-up with their clients in meetings where thy will give financial advice and reassure their concerns. In the end of the day, they will do small administrative tasks and prepare for the next day.

An accountant can work in a business, an office, the civil service, in teaching or in a non-profit organizations.


How can I become an accountant?

After you finish your high school studies, you do a diploma of collegian studies in business administration or a pre-university DEC. Then, you go to university to do a Bachelor in Business Administration.


How much money do accountants make?

When the accountant enters the market they start with $50,000 a year, then with experience they can make about $110,000 a year. So, in general it's about $68,000 a year. But keep in mind that it depend on where you work and for whom.


What kinds of additional training do accountants need?

An accountant will have mandatory continuing education especially if they have the title of CPA that you do in university.


What are the dangers of being an accountant?

Being an accountant can come with a lot of stress especially during some times of the year. So, it can create problems in the mental health of the accountant.


What are the chances that accountants will be replaced by robots soon?

The robots won't be able to replace the entirety of an accountant tasks but there are some tasks that can be automatized by them. That will make the human more efficient to do the bigger tasks.


What age do accountants retire at?

Normally accountant retire at the age of 65, but most people also take the option of doing a partial retirement at the age of 60.

As of now I am doing my DEC in administration, and I wish to go to university to do my Bachelor and then do the exam to become a CPA.
