You play a huge role in people's healthcare, the reason is that they keep details on a patients record for drug use with profiles to make sure the patient won't combine a drug with another one that their taking. They also make sure that the patient is following their doctors instruction with the dosage of the drugs and medications that they were prescribed. A pharmacist can even give physicians advice for the proper us of medication and also the right selection.
In general, pharmacists dispense drugs and medications to patients, they give advice to them on how to take it and when the best time to do it including the side effects that there are. They also maintain records on patient with their medical files, and they do inventory and can also handle the business side of the pharmacy.
On a typical day, a pharmacist would explain to a patient how to use a specific drug or medication, and it's possible side effects, maintain patients records, do inventory, review prescription orders for accuracy and safety. A pharmacist might also supervise staff and might even take on management task like hiring some new staff members or ordering non-pharmaceutical merchandise(like snacks or any other things you'd find in a pharmacy that's not medicine).
A pharmacist can work at a variety of places, here are some example. 60 % of pharmacist work in community or big-chain pharmacies and 25% are employed by hospitals or clinics. There are even some who open their own pharmacies, but those who do that typically have more responsibilities to take on.
First off, to be able to enter pharmacy school, students need to have done at least three years of college(The Princeton review). Then there are undergraduate study that should involve: math and sciences like biology, chemistry and physics, including humanities and Social Sciences. It's recommended that a student checks the curriculums that are recommended by the college of pharmacy that they intend to apply in to meet the admission requirement. After that, the student needs to accomplish, at least, two years of special pre-pharmacy coursework. Finally, they'll need to do four academic years of pharmacy studies.
In Canada, there are a lot of things that can affect a pharmacist salary. For example, the location, the pharmacist's experience and even the workplace environment. In 2025, the annual salary of a pharmacist can range to 95,000 to 120,000 dollars.
For pharmacists that manage a pharmacy, they'll need business and management skills. It is also recommended that pharmacist have great people skills, this may not be additional training, but it can help because they deal with customers/patients the majority of the times.
The main dangers of being a pharmacist are the physical strains since they would spend the majority of their time on their feet and even the stress from the high responsibilities that they have.
I don't believe that pharmacists will be replaced by robots since a big part of the job is to interact with the patients and to make decisions on clinical maters, all things that a robot can not do since they involve human judgment. The technology could make their job easier, but it can never replace it.
There is not really much general information for a what specific age a pharmacist might choose to retire since there are a lot of factors to consider. Although the general age for people to retire is around at the age of 60 to 70, and since as we said pharmacist make a really good wage, there is a chance they might even retire earlier if they invested wisely.
So far, I am currently on my third semester of Natural Science at Montmorency College. I intend to finish my fourth and final semester and then go to university where I may complete all the specific classes to become a pharmacist. After that, when I obtain my license I will open my own pharmacy.
