Being a nurse is to know a lot about health problems, medications, techniques, how to prevent or help, caring the patient, having quick critical judgment and having a lot of human contact.
In general, nurses evaluated the patients states, caring them by talking or listening with them to see if there is nothing wrong, gave them medicines, apply medicals techniques (placing intravenous, wound care, etc), wrote reports, and many more if there are things adding up. They do this for more than 4 patients per shift. It depends on what specialty they are, they aren't all doing this.
It depends on what sector and what unity you are. Usually, we checked the patients state every hour, we administrate medicines, and we wrote report. Sometimes, there are some new tasks that we should get from the patient such as blood sample, stool sample and if the patient is ready to go home, we have to fill papers for them and explain everything if there is need to. Of course, every day can be different, some can be normal and some can be chaotic.
Nurses can work at a lot of places. They can work in hospitals, at a health care or extended care facilities, a rehabilitation centers, clinics, medical offices, pharmacies, community organizations, a call centers, businesses, and schools.
In Quebec, you can become a nurse by first, having some courses requirements such as chemistry (fifth grade) and science (fourth grade) from secondary school. After that, you applied at a Cegep for a Nursing program and hoped to be accepted. Then, you completed your 3 years and success the final exam to be a nurse, exam of OIIQ.
In Quebec, we are the province with the lowest hourly wage. Normally in this province, the lowest per hour for a Registered Nurse is $26, the median is $40, and the highest is $50. But, of course, it depends on what area you are because it can vary, and you can earn higher than that. So, per annually, nurses can make between $54,000 and $100,000+.
Every nurse should know CPR and SPHM. CPR is cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It is used for resuscitating an unconscious patient. SPHM is Principles for Safe Person Handling and Mobility. It is used for preventing injuries while moving a patient They have to do CPR formation every year, unless SPHM.
Being a nurse can face you with danger, that's why we are strong. We can encounter some aggression from patients, having a touch contact with a person who has a disease (contaminate) and the scariest, making a medical problem toward a patient life. We can also encounter some life problems, such as disturbed sleep, tiredness, stress and burn out.
I don't think that robots can replaced nurses. They can probably do easy things like administrate medications, wrote reports, finding problems, and that's it. Robots don't have the contact of humans, so if they tried to be empathy, they won't be like a real nurse. The human touch / human contact is primordial for reassuring the patient, listening and communicating.
The retirement age, here, is around 65 years old, but it can vary. Some peoples can retired early, around 30-45, and some don't. There can be any reasons to retire early such as burn out, health problems, changes job, having enough money, etc. And reasons to retire later is like loving absolutely the job, want to earn more money, family, etc. Honestly, there is no specific age to retire, it only depends on the person.
I am going to my fourth semester in Nursing. I will try hard to get a high Cote R to be able to get to university. My goal is to be a Pediatric Nurse.
