Introduction

My name is Ève, and I have been studying for two and a half years at Ahuntsic College. I study Social Science and my field of study is psychology but, I plan to register in a real estate brokerage program at Maisonneuve College for next fall. This career summary is for anyone who is interested in learning more about the profession of real estate agent.


What is it like to be a real estate agent?

A real estate agent acts primarily as an intermediary between a buyer or a seller of a house, apartment, land, etc.


What do real estate agents do?

A real estate agent can help clients sell their property and estimate a price and list this property for sale on the web or in a catalog. He can also lead visits to properties that are for sale, help potential buyers in their final decision and manage inspections of the property in question. Finally, real estate agents are also here to answer any questions a buyer or a seller has on the current market, the legal conditions of a contract and on the implications of a mortgage for example. Finally, real estate agents are going to prepare sales documents and submit them for buyers or sellers approval.


What do real estate agents do on a typical day?

On a typical day, real estate agents will have to make calls and write emails to clients regarding the process of buying or selling a property regarding the contract or information they need to fill out all of the paperwork. They can also work on listing a property for sale with all the necessary details. If they scheduled a visit for a property on that day, they would need to accompany the client(s) through the visit and answer their questions. Real estate agents will also often work with a mortgage broker regarding the details of the customer file.


Where do real estate agents work?

He or she often works for a real estate company such as ReMax or Vendirect which are big companies in that field. If the real estate broker works for a company, he will often have an assigned office there. He can also work as a self-employed real estate agent with a lot of experience.


How can I become a real estate agent?

To become a real estate broker, you need to a do an AEC (college studies certificate) in residential real estate brokerage and pass the final exam that will allow you to be recognized in your profession by giving you a work permit. Some big companies also offer formation with the aim of doing the exam and get a work permit.


How much money do real estate agents make?

According to Indeed, a real estate agent makes on average $117 000 per year in Quebec which seems to be way higher than other parts of Canada where the cumulative average is only $46 000 per year. Of course, salary will vary depending on how good you are at your job and how much experience you have. Records of the Government of Canada says that the lowest income for a real estate broker is $38.26 per hour, and it can go up to $57,69 on average and $86.03 per hour is the highest salary in Quebec.


What kinds of additional training do real estate agents need?

Real estate agents can have to do a recognition of prior learning which is kind of an accelerated formation. They will also have to learn the basics of the job after their first formation with the help of other real estate agents, like an OJT.


What are the dangers of being a real estate agent?

Sometimes, being a real estate agent is maybe too ambitious for some people that are not necessarily good at selling or good with customer service. If that’s the case, they will have difficulty finding buyers and sellers and, they risk to not make the amount of money they would have liked. Also, real estate agents will more often than not work a lot of overtime which can lead to potential burnouts.


What are the chances that real estate agents will be replaced by robots soon?

Given that this profession leans more towards the theoretical side with calculating the estimation of prices, evaluating and inspecting a property, filling out blank spaces of a predetermined contract and listing properties online, I would say that robots could take over the job of real estate agents pretty soon. However, the aspect of humanity of customer service that the real estate agent has to do toward a buyer or a seller can't accurately be reproduced yet by robots and AI.


What age do real estate agents retire at?

Real estate agent can retire at any age, there is no legal restriction for a specific age.

In conclusion, the profession of real estate agent can be a good option for you if you are someone who works hard, like customer service and if you like having detailed, precise and meticulous tasks to do. And, if you want to make a lot of money.
