Police officer

Introduction

Those who are wondering what to study or those that are interested in becoming a police officer should read this. I recommend reading this before sending you application for Police Technology and not after since it might not be what you imagine. You’ll learn everything you need to know about this job, the difficulties, the salary, the requirements and even more.

What is it like to be a police officer?

It is great since it is a job that gives you a lot of gratitude for the help you gave, but also it is a lot of pressure since you have lives in your hands which is why not everybody is fit for this job.

What do police officers do?

They maintain security, peace and justice by enforcing the federal laws and the provincial rules. They also intervene and interact with different clienteles from babies to senior citizens and people with intellectual deficiency and criminal records to help them if needed, they act as the first responder at the same time as they patrol the city. They also have a lot of paperwork to do after each intervention and can appear in court to give their observation of a situation.

What do police officers do on a typical day?

They patrol the city to observe if any infractions are being committed and if they receive a call from a dispatcher they are sent to a location for an intervention, they take notes with their partner to never lose the information from this call. They can also act as security in some events.

Where do police officers work?

They work in offices at police stations and all around the city where they are employed at. They can work on highways, streets, in houses and in parks. Most of the time they are in the car with their partner. The advantages of the fact that there is a variety of places where their work is that there is always actions, if there’s nothing to do at the office then they go on the streets and, if there is nothing going on on the streets they can check up on previous citizens who made complaints. The disadvantage is that you need to be prepared to work outside in hard conditions, whether there is a storm or not people will need you to be present.

How can I become a police officer?

You need to complete Police Technology which takes three years and then go to the national school of policing which is around three to four months long.

How much money do police officers make?

It depends on your experience and specialty, but you start at around 55 thousands before overtime and can go up to 110 thousands.

What kinds of additional training do police officers need?

They need to have shooting training because they carry guns while working, and they need to get their class 4 A driving license which is for emergency vehicles. Also, they go to the gym to maintain a good cardio-vascular health and physical form in general.

What are the dangers of being a police officer?

They intervene with dangerous people, so sometimes it can be hard to protect themselves while trying to arrest somebody. Therefore, they can be killed or badly injured. Also, these injuries can be the consequence of a car accident because they need to drive fast in difficult and tight streets sometimes to catch another car.

What are the chances that police officers will be replaced by robots soon?

The chances are small since you need to have great communication skills with empathy to help victims which the robots are not soon to be as evolved. The robots could replace the police officers when driving but for the intervention the humans are far more developed to decide how to intervene and what to day depending on who is in front of them.

What age do police officers retire at?

Most of them retire between the age of 50 and 60, but they can retire with a pension after 20 years in the force. At retirement, they can be happy to have made a big impact on the society by being the first person to help them in the most difficult time of their lives, some people only call 911 once in their life and most of the time it is not for something positive, and so they change the trajectory of a lot of people live by how they intervene in these situations and how they reassure families and victims. After, their 20 years of work they can be proud to have served their city.

Conclusion

As of now, I am in my second year of Police Technology. I hope to have finished by 2026 and to get in the national school of policing by 2027 with a job offer from the SPVM.
