Police officers are there to protect the society, to detect and to prevent the crime. They are also there to apply municipal, provincial and national laws. Their role is to maintain peace and order into society while patrolling on foot, by bike, by boat or even on horseback. They participle to different prevention activities and programs to prevent crime. Police officers arrest criminals and to investigations on the different types of crimes.
On their typical day, they start by doing some paper work, and they check their equipment. When they are finished, they begin their patrol, and they respond to the 911 calls they receive. They need to maintain public order and safety. At the end of their shift, they check again their equipment, and they do paper work.
Police officers work in the different cities and municipalities they serve. For example, the police officers who are at the SPVM works in Montreal, those who are at the SQ works all around the Quebec and the ones who are at the SPL works in Laval.
To become a police officer, you need to go to college in Police Technology. This program takes 3 years to finish it or 2 if you already have finished your basic courses. After, you will need to go to the "École nationale de police du Québec (ENPQ)" in Nicolet for 15 weeks. At the end of those studies, you will be ready to start your career as a police officer.
The salary of a police officer depends on several factors like their seniority, their police department and their rank. If I take SPVM as an example, after one year of being a police officer, your salary is $66,563 (including city bonus) and after 6 years it can go around $112,082.
Police officers need additional training in intervention techniques and when there is new equipment. They also receive up-to-date training on the various crimes.
There is a lot of danger in being a police officer. Every time a police officer is on duty, they put their lives in danger and they always at risk of injury and sometimes even death. In addition to physical danger, police officers are at risk of trauma from what they experience while they work.
The chances that police officers will be replaced by robots soon is pretty low because robots won't be able to do all the tasks that a police officer as going in his job. A robot can't interact humanly, it can't arrest someone, it can't stop a car and give a ticket, etc.
Police officers retire mostly after 25 years of service because they need to do minimum 25 years of service to be admissible to the retirement plan. They are on average 53 years old when they retire.
For me, becoming a police officer is my dream job. It’s a job I can’t wait to start. Currently, I am in my second year of Police Technology at Ahuntsic College. Within 3 years, I should have finished my police studies. My goal would be to work for the Sûreté du Québec.
