Also, if I can change the picture those people have of the police with my article, now that they see what we really do and why we do it, I will be happy.

What is it like to be a police officer?

Be a police officer is being there for the population, it's being there to maintain security. It's also grateful to be a police officer, be the person that helped people. They didn't get the recognition they deserve but at the end of the day people are lucky to have the police, and they need it, a world without police service, is not a world. It's fun to be a police officer, when you love your job, and you enjoy, it's fun.

What do police offciers do?

Police officers protect and serve the population, they maintain order and peace.

What do police offciers do on a typical day?

First they got meeting to discuss what's going on in the street. After they take there equipment and prepare the police car. They patrol, arrest people when they don't respect the road code. They answer some call and intervene. They go arrest people when there is arrest warrant on somebody. They do prevention and discuss with people. They do a lot of report.

Where do police offciers work?

They can work in the police station, they work in the streets, some of them work in the subway. They move all the time and everywhere, they answer some calls that need them in a shop, in somebody home, somebody apartment, in the streets, in public park, in the patrol car. They work where people need them.

How can I become a police officer?

To become a police officer you need to do Police Technology in college. You need to do have good grades and to be in a great shape to pass the admission exam. When you are accepted, you do Police Technology in 3 years are some people do it in 4. After that, you need to go to the "ENPQ", "L'École nationale de police'. You need to pass the admission exam and after that, you 450 hours, 15 weeks, of intensive training.

How much money do police offciers make?

In Quebec, it depends where you work, but let's take Montreal for example. A police officer will make in minimum $26.44/h, on average $47/h and on top $57.99/h. When the police officer just begin he will be at the lowest after some year he will be in the average and after a lot of years he will be at the top. We saw in classes that after 6 years the police officer reach the maximum, so after 6 years he will be at the top.

What kinds of additional training do police offciers need?

It depends on where the police officer want to go or be. After 5 years of patrol, they police officer can choose if he wanted to stay on the patrol are if he wanted to be something else in the police. For example, investigator, a sergeant, member of the GTI (like the SWAT), some of these positions require additional training, and sometimes you need to return school, like investigator you need to study this at a university. But police officers have training for example if they change the guns, they will need a training, to learn out how to uses it properly, are right now they receive a lot of training about racism or how to interact properly with people with mental health.

What are the dangers of being a police officer?

Yes, police officers put their lives in danger physically, they can get shot or attacked. But the biggest danger of a police offices is himself. Is mental health is the most important, and sometimes it is the one that is forgotten. The biggest danger is that he is not good mentally. If he is not at his 100% in his head, he will put his life in danger but also the life of his partner and the life of the population. So, the biggest danger of being a police officer is being not good mentally and do nothing about it. Because it a happens to every police officer to be down mentally, but they do something about it, the police department have psychologist that is at the disposal of every police officers, to help them talk about their problems and help them face it. So, the one that do nothing become a danger to everybody around him and especially him.

What are the chances that police offciers will be replaced by robots soon?

For me, there is no chance that police officers will be replaced by robots. Okay Robocop and the movie of robot, but it' just fiction, in no world robot are going to be better than police officers. They have no emotion, how do you want to help people, understand their situation, have some empathy and compassion if the thing that helps you have nothing of that. It's just impossible! Good officers are the one with good judgment that is able to decide by what the person feels and react. A robot is just going to give people ticket and arrest people, that is not what the police is all about. Police need real human with judgment, emotion and that is able to use their power in the good way that the thing go.

What age do police offciers retire at?

It changes a lot but to retire and have the retirement pension for example the GRC it's after 25 years of service and for the maximal retirement pension it's 35 years of service. So, people stop around this time of service. I saw that the average age is around 52 to 57 years old, but I'm not sure if it's really true. But most of the students in Police Technology at Ahuntsic College will finish the college around 21 and 22 years old and became police officers around this age, if we say that in average police officers start their career at 22-23 years old and to like 25 to 35 years of service that mean they retire around 48 to 58 years old. Of course, this is not the exact number and there is some exception.

Conclusion

To conclude, the job of police officers is grateful and fun, they protect and serve. More specifically they patrol, have meeting, arrest people, talk with the society. They work where people need them. To become a police officer you need to do Police Technology and go to "ENPQ". They make between $26,44 to $57.99 per hours. They can have additional training if the want to change positions in the organization or to be in touch with the current issues. The danger of being a police officer can be physical but also psychological. There is no chance that robot replace human for this job. And police officers retire after 25 to 35 years of service.
