Being a paramedic can be overwhelming because of the unpredictability of the job. Whether it's the variable working hours or the variety of cases we encounter, it's all a lot and can drain someone who isn't prepared. Another aspect is the physical demand this job takes on our body. Always transporting patients who aren't always in perfect health can cause injuries to the paramedics. A lot of other aspects can be enumerated, but the most important one is the reward of the job. In fact, paramedics are seen as heroes to the city. They help people who are living their worst day and this is the most gratifying part of the job.
There are a lot of sides to what paramedics can do. For starters, the traumatic side when a person suffers an accident like falling off a roof or a car accident. In those types of accident, we have to immobilize the patient and taking them to the hospital in less time possible is the crucial part. There is also the resuscitation side, when a patient heart stops, and they have to be resuscitated. This is the scariest part of the job for a lot of paramedics. The medical side is when we give medication like epinephrine, aspirin, midazolam and other to help people with the pain or to stop their convulsions for example. Those are the more important sides of the jobs but there are plenty others.
The paramedics start their day a the ambulance barracks, and then they go on the road to respond to calls. A typical day would be to respond to a call at someone's house, help them, and then bring them to the hospital. We can do from about four to eight calls in a ten to twelve hours shift.

There is a certain complexity about some of our cases in which we have to make decisions depending on every situation, and I don't think robots are capable of that. There is also an importance of human connection and emotional support in our jobs. While robots are trained methodically, they don't have that kind of empathy or reassurance.
Paramedics can retire from the age of 55 years old. However, there are a lot of job possibilities for paramedics who are injured or tired to work long shifts. Some of them become trainers, teachers, supervisors, chiefs of a company, and a lot of other opportunities are possible. I think that once someone enters the health care department, it's hard for them to quit because of the impact they have on people's lives.
I am starting my third year in the school program, although I am doing it in four. I will become a paramedic in 2026. For now, my goals are to work hard in school and pass all of my courses to be able to graduate. Later on, I would like to go to university to become a paramedic in advanced care. I can't wait to help people and make an impact on their lives.
