Police officer

Introduction

Maybe you already wanted to become a police officer. If so, you must read my article on this topic. I have always been interested in the police world since a young age, and now I have the chance to be part of it. That's why I write interesting information about police officers here.

What is it like to be a cop?

A cop is a professional in the field of law enforcement. He works to monitor and protect different communities. As peacekeeping professionals, they can work in many environments and perform different tasks depending on their area of focus.

What do polices officers do?

The police officers mainly carry out, during their shifts, patrols in the areas assigned to them, carry out road checks and issue tickets, write reports and fill out forms, collect evidence at crime scenes, arrest people who have committed crimes, search warrant and records databases, respond to emergencies, testify in court. These are just a few examples of jobs a police officer has to take care of during their shifts.

What do polices officers do on a typical day?

A police officer works approximately 8 hours shift in a row. Sometimes hours of additional time are necessary to properly complete the procedure. So, when he comes home in the morning, evening or night, he doesn't necessarily know when he's going to finish. A typical day for a police officer is to respond to emergency calls from citizens, fill out intervention reports and carry out prevention under the Highway Safety Code. Obviously, several other tasks are added during the shift.

Where do polices officers work?

Police officers primarily work in a car throughout their shifts. Sometimes, they return to their neighborhood post to fill out reports or other documents related to an intervention they had. Also, when called to the community, police officers may find themselves working in citizens' homes, cottages or garages.

How can I become a cop?

To become a police officer, you must first obtain your high school diploma. Afterwards, you must pass the physical aptitude test to access Police Technology. After completing the 3-year DEC, you must pass another physical test, a psychometric test and a medical test. These tests are carried out by the National Police Academy. After passing all these tests, there are 15 weeks of training at the ENPQ. Finally, at the end of these 15 weeks, you receive your accreditation as a peace officer for the province of Quebec.

How much money do polices officers make?

A police officer makes C$81,989. It's approximately $39 per hour for Montreal police officers. It's a decent salary considering that for example in Florida, police officers make USD $71k per year. Obviously, it's more money in Canadian dollars, but it proves that the salary is relatively the same for us as for our neighbors the Americans.

What kinds of additional training do polices officers need?

As a police officer, it is often the officer's duty to stay physically fit and up to date with his techniques. This is why additional strength training and/or combat training can always be useful. In the field everything can be useful, the more knowledge the better. Then, continuous training in communications techniques, even outside of working hours, can allow a police officer to complete an intervention more quickly and efficiently than usual.

What are the dangers of being a cop?

Being a police officer can bring many dangers. When a cop makes an intervention, no matter how dangerous, he must always be accompanied by his teammate because he is not able to know exactly how the person will react to his intervention. So, the level of danger is always present in the police profession. The dangers of being a police officer are finding yourself in a situation of weakness caused by the people with whom you have intervened, and knowing how to regain the upper hand to carry out the intervention successfully. Also, being a police officer can be mentally difficult for some people. The schedules are not always easy and adapting is not an easy task, so it is easy to end up breaking down.

What are the chances that polices officers will be replaced by robots soon?

Police officers are often confronted with technology. Nowadays, it is not uncommon to see police officers being filmed during interventions. But it is also common for them to use technology to their advantage to find information about a certain person. Beyond being confronted with technology, I do not believe that artificial intelligence will completely replace the police and/or do the work in their place. When a call comes in, it's a human who takes the call, who reassures another human. It is a human who will present themselves to the situation to intervene accordingly.

What age do polices officers retire at?

A police officer can have a career lasting more than 35 years. On the other hand, even after 35 years of service, it is possible to continue in the field until the age of 61. In certain cases, a police officer can end his career at the age of 56, the pension fund reaches its full potential.

Conclusion

In conclusion, being a police officer is a remarkable job.
