You will learn some of the most important things to know before beginning your studies. I am writing this to let people who want to pursue this job know what the profession of a lawyer really is all about.

What is it like to be a lawyer?

Being a lawyer can be pretty demanding. Lawyers often spend a lot of their day and nighttime at the office, reading cases and writing contracts.

What do lawyers do?

Normally, lawyers will advise and represent their clients, when they are in need of help in criminal or civil proceedings, for example, They also present the facts of their cases to the judge and do a lot of legal research.

What do lawyers do on a typical day?

On a typical day, lawyers arrive at the office in the morning, and the first thing that they do is answering their emails. They also advise their clients about their rights, they supervise legal assistants, and prepare for trial and negotiating settlements.

Where do lawyers work?

Lawyers can work in a large variety of places. On a regular day, they often work at their law firm or office. However, when they have to meet a client, they may have to travel at various locations, such as homes or prisons, or even in court. When they have an audience to attend, they can also go to the tribunal.

How can I become a lawyer?

To become a lawyer, you have to graduate High School with a diploma, and then go to Cegep. Before you start studying in Cegep, you can either chose to go in Paralegal Technology like I chose to do, which is a three-year program, or you can choose to do any other program of two years. After graduating from Cegep, you then have to go to university in Law School, which is a program of three years, but to get accepted in this program, you need to get an R score in Cegep that is higher than 30 or 31, which is pretty hard to do. After finishing your three years of Law School in university, you have to pass the Bar exam, which takes in between four or eight months of preparation, depending on what you decide to do. After you passed all of this, you can then become a lawyer.

How much money do lawyers make?

In Canada, lawyers make an average of $150,000 per year. When you begin your lawyer career, you can start at $104,930 per year, while older and more experienced lawyers can make up to 188,375 per year.

What kinds of additional training do lawyers need?

Some students might want to get a Juris Doctor, which is a degree granted to someone who completes Law School, leading to practicing law as a licensed attorney in their state. Obtaining a Juris Doctor can benefit any lawyer by allowing specific career opportunities, providing opportunities to learn life skills, and allowing for networking activities.

What are the dangers of being a lawyer?

In my opinion, the strongest drawbacks to being a lawyer are the mental health issues. They can be caused by high stress situations, important amounts of deadlines to respect, long hours of work, expensive education, low amount of clients and many more. By becoming a lawyer, you also risk severe depression and becoming a workaholic. If you are a criminal lawyer, the criminal life of your client can sometimes be dangerous for your life too if you get too involved in the situation.

What are the chances that lawyers will be replaced by robots soon?

According to experts, it is very unlikely that lawyers will be replaced by AI-powered tools. They say that robots will never be able to replace the human touch that only humans can provide to their clients. However, some robots could have the ability to do some law related jobs, such as drafting contracts of even representing clients in court.

What age do lawyers retire at?

According to the Federation of Law Societies in Canada, the average lawyer retires at age 75.

Conclusion

To conclude, if you want to be a lawyer, you have to be really passionate about law. I am now at the end of my second year in Paralegal Technology, and I want to go to university after, to become a criminal lawyer. I have been dreaming about doing this job since I was a kid, and it would be a dream for me to achieve it.
