First, we inspect our equipment and our truck, then we leave for a place designated by our communications center and this is called our waiting point, then we wait for a call to be assigned to us then we go to the patient. After we transported him to the hospital we cleaned the truck and started again.
Paramedics work in their trucks everywhere in cities and rural areas as well as forests, rivers, the metro, and most importantly in people's private homes where we enter into their privacy.
You can become a paramedic by going to college and completing a DEC in Prehospital Emergency Care, then you have to do internships, and the companies will then hire you and make you take the Quebec provincial exam and if, you pass it you will become a paramedic.
A paramedic does $27.33 an hour, but you can have a bonus wage by working during nights and there's a lot of extra time that you are obligated to do so they have quite a good salary but for the job they do it is not enough.
Paramedics can have a lot of additional training even after school because medicine is always in constant evolution, so we can have additional training for new equipment we have, or we can have training for new protocol, and finally, we can have additional training for new medication we can administer.
There is not a huge danger when we are a paramedic because we always have to assess the scene before going to the patient to avoid putting our lives in danger, sometimes it happens that we have aggressive patients, and they attack us with punches or kicks, so the only potential danger is being attacked by one of our users. But there is another danger paramedics often do not think about, PTSD following traumatic events, so these can be considered to be a danger for ourselves.
I don't believe that one day paramedics will be replaced by robots, because this work must have a very human side with empathy, and it's hard to give that to a robot, so in my opinion the probability that they be replaced is very weak.
Paramedics retire at quite a young age around 50 years old because it is a job that demands a lot on your body it is very physical, and most importantly it is hard for your mental to see so many traumatic things during your career, so you cannot do this job for such a long time because of those specific reasons.
For my part, I reached my last session next year. I will do my internships and then head to the Urgence santé company to continue my career as a paramedic, and I intend to always do my best to help people because that is in my values.
