It is a challenging field. In this technology era, there are always new devices in our field. I learn new techniques every day. It's a growing career as well with lots of opportunities. What I love the most in this career is helping people, specially older ones to make the right exam with the adequate images to allow the right diagnosis.
Diagnostic imaging technologists use several machines with ionized radiation to take images of the inner body organs to help radiologists make a diagnosis of the disease.
The technologist has specific tasks to be done whether he works in scanning, radiography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or radioscopy. The technologist begins his day by viewing the list of patients, and he starts to prepare his itinerary depending on the emergency of the case. Then, he begins to do the necessary exam for the patient according to the prescription
Diagnostic Imaging technologists work in variety of places. They can work in governmental sector like hospitals, and Integrated University Health and Social Services Centres, or private-sectors like private clinics, and sales.the governmental sector has benefits like vacation policy, but the salary is bigger in the private sector.
In Quebec, to become a Diagnostic Imaging technologist you must have a DCS (Diploma of College Studies). You must finish the Diagnostic Imaging Program, which consist of 2 years theory, and third year is an internship, Then, you must pass the syndicate's exam to get the permit.
In Quebec, the starting salary for a Diagnostic Imaging technologist is 24,50 CAD per hour.
To keep the permit updated, the member must accumulate at least 30 hours of training during the reference period, respecting a minimum of 5 hours per year. However, the board of directors may impose, by resolution, on the members or a class of them, a particular training activity.
