Hi, my name is Anne-Daura .I'm a sonographer student at Cegep Ahuntsic.I made a FAQ for people who want to become a sonographer one day and for curious people who want to know more about the field.I think that it is very important to know about the job and what are the qualification and expectation.
Being a sonographer is nice but demand a lot of minuteness because you have to find or prove the patient body part that you are analyzing is normal and "if" it's not being able to show it to the radiologist.
Most of the time,sonographer are called to scan humans body part and reviewing those images to make sure that those images are relevant to help the radiologist to give a diagnosis to the patient.
A sonographer should arrive one hour before your shift starts to open your ultrasound machine and prepared and clean the room you will use for the exams.Sometimes, you have some test to run just to make sure that the machine settings are functional.After that, you review your patient charts before they arrive.When the patient arrives, you going to have to ask them certain types of questions to make sure that they consent the exam and to also guide the sonographer while she's scanning. You will see 8 to17 patients per day.
Most of the time we work in a hospital or in a medical clinic.It could happens that sometimes some sonographers decided to work at a research center.
In Quebec, you definitely need to finish all your high school class and have the certification for it. You need to apply at a Cegep between Ahuntsic and College Dawson and get accepted into the programs.You need to pass all those courses (physic, anatomy and physiology obstetric ,vascular, cardiac and psychology). After that, you have one year of clinical and then the board exam to pass.
A sonographer gets pay $36,85 an hour.
When you start working, you are going to have to listen and participate in a conference about your specialties. You need to at least 3 to 5 conference per year.

The average is 65 years old, but it depends on how to person feel and "if" she/he still able to use their hands.
