What is it like to be economist?

Every day is different and challenging when you are an economist. It varies in the field that an economist chooses, international economists can travel a lot, and financial economists can do a lot of meetings with other professionals and authorities to forecast the movement and rate of international financial markets Economists work intimately with other economists and collaborate, leading to a strong sense of a group inside the occupation. It's a very theoretical-oriented job, and sometimes reality isn't what the theory predicts, which can be difficult for some professionals.

What do economists do?

In general economists accumulate and analyze data, investigate trends, and assess economic concerns, by spotting trends in financial activity and consumer attitudes. They evaluate this information by utilizing techniques in statistical analysis, mathematics and computer programming. Then, they give bits of advice about methods to enhance the effectiveness of a system or make use of trends as they start to rise.

What do economists do on a typical day?

Most economists work in an office, some cooperate with other economists and statisticians. The majority of economists works full-time during business hours, typically from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but to meet deadlines they can be confronted with working overtime. The day consists on giving economic analysis on issues that are both recurring and short-term.

Where do economists work?

Candidates can work in federal, state, and local government. Federal government economists collect and analyze data about the U.S. economy, including employment, prices, productivity, and wages, among other types of data. They also project spending needs and inform policymakers on the economic impact of laws and regulations. Economists also work for international organizations, research firms, think tanks, banks, non-profits, and they can also work in education.

How can I become economist?

Future economists generally need at least a master’s or a Ph.D degree to get into the profession. Although some starter positions, predominantly in the federal government are available to people that want to work with a bachelor’s degree. Criteria may vary if an economist works in the public or private side of said profession, but overall candidates shouldn't be uncomfortable with computers, numbers, and long academic papers.

The median annual wages for economists was $105,630 in May 2021. Depending on the study and if an economist works in the public or the private industry, their salary may vary.

Since a lot of economists tend to open a consulting firm, it might be important for them to take Business classes. Also, many become leaders, some Communication and Management courses can be helpful.

What are the dangers of being economist?

The dangers are mostly related to stress, since working over-time is really common in this industry. Being overwhelmed is also very customary. So, taking a work load that can give you time to relax and recharge is very important.

What are the chances that economists will be replaced by robots soon?

It is unlikely that economists will be completely replaced by robots in the near future. While some artificial intelligence can perform certain analytical tasks, economics involves more than analyzing numbers; you have to be able to communicate clearly, which robots can't do like humans.

What age do economists retire at?

The retirement age varies a lot, since a lot of economists never really leave their profession, some tend to publish books or scholarly papers related to finance. After the ten-year mark economists have notable client experience and powerful directive and bureaucratic skills. One forth of experts start consulting firms. Many more work at banks, brokerage houses, or other financial consulting firms. Some go back to school to become professors, or to write books or to publish articles which can give a remarkable boost to their remuneration and reputation in the profession.

Conclusion

I am currently studying in a program called financial services and insurance, it's a three-year program in cegep. When I am going to be done with these three years I want to go to university and do a bachelor of economics, at the well-known Université de Montréal. Finally, I really want to work with the government or with a bank, I feel like these two fields are going to be the most interesting and challenging for me, which can keep me interested.
