There are many words that can describe what it is like to be a criminologist. The most accurate would be exciting, interesting, and unpredictable. One must be able to see things from different perspectives.
Criminologists study human behaviour and compare it to what is considered normal. They can be thought of as investigators in the sens that they often work with law enforcement.
There are different types of criminologists. Most criminologists study behaviour and analyze patterns in order to solve crimes.
Some may work in a lab or police department studying crimes and suspects to create a profile to be used to help solve crimes. Others may work at the scene of crimes or even perform autopsies.
Becoming a criminologist is not easy. It requires years of schooling in order to fully understand the theories needed to find solutions. Many people looking to pursue a career in criminology need a degree in sociology and psychology as well as a general understanding of statistics, writing, computer science, and logic.
Starting off, most criminologists receive average salaries. After five years, pay will increase along with hours worked and responsibilities. It is only after ten years, and multiple promotions, that one will receive a higher than average salary.
Many criminologists began working with only a bachelor's degree. To pursue a career in education a doctorate is a necessity and knowledge of statistics and computer science. On the job training is also very important. Since most criminologists work for the government or police agencies, a clean background check and a written examination is required.
Working as a criminologist can be frustrating as it may seem that your work is doing nothing to help and most begin doing fieldwork and data collection. Many are dissatisfied with the nature of their work and 15% change professions after five years. Only those who have worked for a long time receive benefits and are able to work as analysts.
As with many jobs, it is always a possibility but the nature of the job requires understanding human behaviour and emotion, which is something robots are not yet close to achieving.
Since most criminologists are federal employees, they are able to retire relatively early with decent benefits. If one is to work as a criminologist for their entire career, they will have received a title and respect within the community as well as having likely published papers and theories. Most can retire knowing they helped many people throughout their career.
Although criminology is something I would like to pursue, I'm still very early in my education. Even if I complete the necessary schooling required, it may be many years before I am actually able to work as a real criminologist. That being said, the nature of the work and the possibility of retiring early are worth pursuing.
