It's talking about what it's like to be a criminologist, where you can work, what's the salary, the dangers, what additional training you can have, what they do on a typical day, and some more! I was motivated to write it because true crime was always something I was into since I was young, and it would be an absolute dream for me to become a real criminologist, so I could work while doing my passion!

What is it like to be criminologist?

There are multiple ways to see what it's like to be a criminologist. Some says that it is “exciting“, “interesting“, “fascinating“ or “unpredictable“. However, some also says that it can be “gruesome“ sometimes.

Being a criminologist is focused on the human and counseling. It's also related with the laws, justice, Psychology and Criminal Sociology. The first goal is to reintegrate these people in our society while protecting people rights and our community.

What do criminologists do on a typical day?

What criminologist do on a typical day really depends on where they're working and in which branch. However, some of the things they can do on a work day: going to crime scenes, attending autopsies, reviewing behaviors of a certain demographic group, filling reports, and questioning potential suspects (to see if they fall in the psychological profile), etc.

Where do criminologists work?

A criminologist can work in multiple places and environments and, I think it's an advantage of it due to the variety of options. As a criminologist, in general terms you can work for the government, law enforcement or as a researcher. But more precisely, you can work as a private investigator, correctional officer, loss prevention officer, probation officer, social worker, police officer, detective or lawyer. However, some of these needs other diplomas other than the one for being a criminologist.

How can I become criminologist?

I we talk about being a criminologist by going to school, you must own a degree in Criminology (a baccalaureate or a certificate) from an accredited university. You can also have more degrees related to it like a Sociology or Law degree. However, if you want to be a good criminologist some of the qualities you must have: being able to do research projects and be good with teamwork, having communication skills to explain to others the concepts, wanting to help in the crime world and societal conditions.

You don't “need“ additional training to be a criminologist but some degrees can be really good assets such as Law, Anthropology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Psychology or Social Sciences.

What are the dangers of being criminologist?

There are some dangers of being a criminologist such as questioning dangerous suspects of horrible crimes like murders, rapes, cannibalism etc. It can also be a lot frustrating when clues are missing and criminals are not apprehended. These situations can cause feelings of guilt.

What are the chances that criminologists will be replaced by robots soon?

I don't think there is a lot of chance of it happening because criminologist are working with behaviors, emotions or mental health, so it is not something robots could really replace us with because they don't have the ability to understand the humans' brain or feelings. From my point of view, it would be totally unproductive for our society to do that.

What age do criminologists retire at?

Criminologist usually retire between 56 and 61 years old.

Conclusion

At the moment, I'm still in cegep, but my goal is to go at UDEM to do the certificate of Criminology and then enter the Baccalaureate of Criminology. My biggest goal is obviously becoming a renowned criminologist and be the best in what I do. Also, I would like to help offenders with mental health problems and understand what's going on inside their heads.
