I don't think animator will ever be replaced by robots. In my opinion, art is human, it needs human creativity. Sure there are some AI (artificial intelligence) who can generate art but still.
After about five years, animators begin to work more independently, they direct their own large-scale project. And after 10 years only about 20% of the animators who started remains. These animators run projects and have complete responsibility for final products and usually work with big movie studio.
I'm currently in cegep, and still experiencing the many facets of my program. When I am done, I will see if I want to continue onward to university, but even if I don't I'll be proud that I chose such an interesting career path.
